Or maybe physics from the gun shots, someone shoots you and you literally get 'blown away' knocked over etc, depending on wear you were shot and by what etc.

A lot of games if you just turn up the difficulty (talking about SP games here) it gets close to this but the problem is the enemy would remain the same.

In fact playing mass effect 2 on insanity , really forces you to become more strategic (although this is all very limited in this game). In this game you have shields and once thats gone you lose health.

On insanity your shields vanish after two bullets and then the same for your health, but the enemies take a total pounding. So unfortunately the gun fights turn into you wearing the enemy down bit by bit and constantly taking cover waiting for your shields to power up again.

I was disappointed, the enemies should be as vulnerable as you. :(

In terms of pure one shot one kill MP gaming, arma does pull this off decently, you can have VERY intense firefights. The reason its not over in a second is that there is a bit of skill involved in actually hitting your target, just like in RL. Where as in a typical shooter you can spin around jump in the air and head shot someone across the map (on pc anyway).

GTA4 multilayer was a massive disappointment for example, it was too easy to kill people on the PC, your guns had feck all recoil. There was no car chases, cause they end instantly due to how easy it was to lean out of a window and head shot someone in another moving car.

This would have been a littler harder on consoles due to the pad, it was a shame they should have added extra recoil or something to the pc, to balance how easy it is to die with how easy it is to shoot.

Last time I actually wanted to play through an FPS (of sorts) was either Portal or Mirror's Edge. They've become quite repetitive and boring. I'm looking forward to Portal 2, particularly the co-op aspect but there's nothing before that's released that is anyway a step forward in FPS gaming.

This guy Martin Hollis came out with another odd quote he said he couldn't play PS3 title Flower cause it was so emotionally provoking. He sounds like the type of man that cries during sex.

The problem with this is not that game developers can't do it, but that it just turns the game into a simulator, you'll never be able to have big action scenes because they would be too difficult for the player. Just look at how much you get shot in say mw2 single player, even on the easiest difficulty you get shot quite a bit. The only way this would work is if it was a more mystery/adventure type game with very little in the form of shooting or in more hardcore form of hitman. I think it would be excellent if it was done in the right kind of game tho with a great story and some intense sneaking etc Knowing that one shot could kill you would keep you on edge the whole time.

And of course to be a truely realistic wartime FPS, it would involve your character riding around on patrol in the back of a people carrier for months on end without seeing any action at all. Who wants to play that game? :p
