Cautiously optimistic about Callaghan. Hopefully shouldn't cost too much but at the same time seems fairly qualified. Obviously a tough job on his hands, but I reckon as good as we could have hoped to get. Still would like to see Heary as assistant or something similar, but hopefully we can start getting a squad together now and sort out pre-season.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

The story is very bizarre if true.

Why let a manager sign up a load of players in the off season and then let him talk to one of your rival clubs?

He's a really good player. Can play centre back or full back and is a fantastic signing for you's. Very consistant!

Supposedly yes, one signed for Pats.

Seany Byrne and John Sullivan staying with Shels, Brian Shortall (Pats) signed for Shels. Keith Buckley signed back with Bohs.

And Ger O'Brien. Either Inchicore has become the new London or dreamers has been spouting massive amounts of grade A ****e.

I dont mean to break up the Pats vs Shels budget issue as for once the moaning isnt aimed at us for once...although...

It seems both clubs are offering high enough amounts. If both sides are true and the other club is offering more money than the other for players..and you both seem to be getting about a 50/50 split of these players...than you're both way in over your heads. Last season you both budgeted for much larger crowds than expected and if it wasnt for a good cup run Shels would have been way behind... Has this changed or?

It seems as though us and Pats are the only teams really competing for Dublin based players at the moment, so unless Matthews and Buckley are undergoing a serious bidding war (which I doubt) there is no reason to suggest either of us are paying over the odds for players.

The way I see it at the moment, Shamrock Rovers will probably keep the bulk of their squad from last season, sign a few players from abroad, and maybe take the few top out of contract players that they want. Shels and Pats won't be competing with them realistically for these players. They'll lose.

There are as yet no indications that Bohs, Dundalk or Drogheda are actively pursuing the best of what is left of the Dublin/Leinster pile. All 3 seem to be in the middle of, or recovering from serious financial obstacles and will probably end up with what is left of what us, Rovers and Pats take (perhaps Dundalk excluded, but I'm yet to hear them linked with any Premier Division players from last year other than those already with them).

So for most players that Shels and Pats go in for they'll realistically just be facing each other as competition. Both sides can only have so many players in their squad and we've already signed 11 without bringing in any massive earners (10 of our signings will be with us last year).

If the rumours are true, we outbid them for Conan Byrne and Philly Hughes, and they've outbid us for Chambers, O'Brien and one of Murphy and Clarke (possibly both but I doubt it). All this indicates to me is that Matthews and Buckley are willing to spend that little bit more on the players they really want, and to step back on those that they don't. It would be much more worrying for either party if one side had managed to win every bidding war as it would certainly indicate that they were spilling the bucks.

Realistically speaking, us and Pats will most likely be looking at similar, prrobably reasonable budgets, similar average attendances for the season (even if they think they're Borussia Dortmund) and both of us will probably be fighting with Cork and maybe Dundalk in the tier behind Rovers, Sligo and Derry.

Neither side has made any real indications that they're spending big so this whole argument really does come down to one poster claiming to be in the know talking tripe.

Not so sure. Think sportsworld are gone too, and Slevin isnt putting much, if any, money in. Fenlon should bankroll the club for a bit. Gotta wait and see I guess.

    Overpaying or overspending?

You offered more to players than we did and we got the above 14 within budget and 7 more to be confirmed. Dont think you offered any of them deals? Murphy maybe?

Decent set of players there but still lacking a striker and centre back. Kavanagh and E Mac Millan and Bradley in still in talks.

Average manager when he was with Longford. Didn't really bring much to the table IMO.

Players in UCD didn't rate him at all as a coach either, so time will tell.

We talked to Fagan, Ger O'Brien, Pat Flynn, Chambers, Barry Murphy and possibly Clarke (not 100% on him). I'm nearly sure all where offered contracts by Alan Matthews.

Is Kenny Browne on a 12 month contract with yous like he was at Waterford?

I liked him tbh, he'd be ideal of a team like yourselves who are trying to start from scratch.

some serious signings there by Pats. Can see a big gap from top 3 to the rest.

So much for Pat's budget being between €5.5k and €6.5k

Still have 1300 left for the final 3 players Emac, Bradley and Kavanagh. Which brings us to exactly 5.5k for 17 1st team players and 4 U19s.
We may go above that if we get 2 sponsorship deals that are being worked on. Also UEFA money from LAST season is the main part of this seasons budget. Well what Aer Lingus didnt get :(

Rovers in for Emac we wont be able to match what they offer.

Is this the same Dinny Corcoran?!! He was the complete opposite last season for us (Drogs)

He was top scorer with us last season (7 or 8 goals) but his finishing really was comically bad at times. Very weak shot on him a lot of the time.
His all round game though is very good. Hes a tidy footballer and I'm a little sorry to see him go, as are a lot of Drogs. Then again theres also quite a few happy to see him go!

I find it extremely difficult to believe that you have signed players of that quality at an average of €300 p/w. A lot of the signings are good premier league players.

I agree its odd, but realisticaly its us or Shels for most of the Dublin based players. Bohs Drogs and Dundalk to a point but for most of them theres not much travelling or none at all in some cases. Europe not so much an edge for us as some players have said they wont sign for us as we are in Europe.

Rovers get the cream of the crop we fight over whats left.

Rovers < Best of their current squad plus whoever they want thats available.
    Sligo pretty good squad
Derry/Cork Decent local squads with a few from outside the area.
Shels/Pats pick of leftovers at around 300pw
Dundalk some locals and few of the dublin based players not signed by above
    UCD well its UCD
Mons same but with Rod Factor
    Bohs under 12s
    Drogs same as dundalk
    Bray anyone

Reckon the league will end out similiar to above.

I know wages have dropped but if Buckley has gotten that squad with that budget then that is excellent business and would give me confidence that we won't be as poor as I thought we would be.
I think that Pat's squad is better than Derry's or Corks and not a whole lot behind Sligo's. I actually think Rovers could run away with the league this year with Kenny in charge and Pats and Sligo battling for 2nd a long way off.

Nope training times were supposed to be afternoon but most of our players working knocked that on the head. Assume it be 3 times a week and twice(with 1 gym ) when the midweek ****e kicks in.

And why sign for Shels over Pats if offered similar money? We're an established premier division side and we're gonna be playing in Europe this season. Shels have just been promoted after many years in Div1.

It may simply be a case of "Player Striker A" looking at both clubs, seeing what Strikers are there currently and deciding on a club based on his perceived likelyhood of getting a game, week-in, week-out.

Alos, dreamers has said that some players won't play for Pats because of Europe.

Or as you said, Pats are an established squad, so may be harder for players to break into that, Shels not so much in some areas.
