Contributory State Pension + Work

    Hi Folks,

First of all apologies if this is not in the correct forum.

My father recently turned 66 and is now in receipt of a contributory state pension.

He retired from work as a mechanic last month after 44 years service with the one employer.

In recent weeks his former employer has contacted him asking him would he be available to do some services.

My father has declined as he is not too sure if he is allowed to work while in receipt of his pension.

Also if he is allowed to work while in receipt of his pension how much can he earn?

Please note the above is based on him getting a couple of services per month and a very minimal amount of money. He just felt if he was allowed to do a bit it would be a good way of getting out of the house.

    Cheers

According to the citizens info site you are allowed to work while getting a contributory pension without losing any of the pension http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/retirement/older-people-and-working/working_in_retirement

So long as it is definitely a contributory pension he can work away, will not affect his pension at all. Be aware though that both the employment and the pension are taxable and having an extra income may bring him back into tax bracket.

You should also ensure that your Dad pays a 'J' class PRSI contribution from now on too.

It is pointless paying the 'S' class or 'A' class (more costly and no benefit as he no longer needs to cover himself for contributory pension). He needs to be covered for Occupational Injury only.

He should contact PRSI Refund section, Oisin House, Pearse Road Dublin to enquire about getting a refund for the past few years. He could give them a buzz - I'd imagine their number is welfare.ie website.
