Blackberry on pay as you go?

I got blackberry curve phone lately from a friend and slotted in my O2 pay as you go sim. I'm just wondering is it possible to access emails / blackberry messenger even if I'm not a bill pay customer? If so, how do I do this? Sorry if the question sounds stupid, am a blackberry newbie! :cool:
