How much do people expect to pay for the replacement of a hard drive on a 2004 Dell Dimension computer, plus recovery of some old photos on the old drive.
There is a wild fluctuation in estimates. One outfit has already taken €69 off me just for diagnosing the problem and now want €230 for putting in a new drive, plus a minimum of €150 for data recovery. Another will do the same, minus data recovery for €110, but they have had some negative publicity over security issues.
A third company will do the drive, software installation, plus data recovery(if possible) for €200.
Would i better off just going for a new cpu, but i'd still like the data back?

i'm not all that tech savvy but I am being told that the hard drive is faulty. When i said cpu i thought that was the whole box. In other words would I be better off getting a new computer.

You would probably be better off getting a new PC or laptop (about 500 euro or so would cover most peoples needs) then getting the data recovered off the old Hard drive.
The recovery doesnt seem to be costing too much so I would assume the drive itself is not physically damaged.

assuming the hard drive is still working you are better off getting a new pc and usinng one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35057 to pull the data from the drive

A new drive won't be more than €60-100 but for a 2004 machine I'd reckon you would be better off picking up a new box.

Here for example (http://www.adverts.ie/125/desktops/) particularly something like this (http://www.adverts.ie/318974/desktops/dimension-9200/) or this (http://adverts.ie/312489). Both looking €300, both look good for your needs, neither are any relation...

Or just buy new at 500-1000.

The copying over should be pretty straight forward, I can lend a hand if needs be.

Thanks very much for those responses. My problem is that the old hard drive is faulty and I'd like to recover some photos from it. So I am facing cost of recovery plus replacement of hard drive plus data recovery from broken hard drive.

It may not even be possible to recover anything, but if it is, you'll be able to do it yourself with recovery software. Paying someone to do this is a complete waste of money, especially on a 6 year old computer.

Spend your money on a new computer, put the old disk into it, and see if it can recovered yourself. Be prepared for that to fail though, as there is a chance it's gone for good.
