Perhaps her heart condition was better treated in a hospital with the instrumentation of Great Ormonde Street Hospital

Indeed. Tragic as the death may be, it warrants consideration that our own system was seemingly incapable and that particularly so in light of recent news from Cork.

    Sympathy to family.

But this does raise a very good question.
We are being told that local hospitals are being down graded and we are supposed to have Centre of Excellence and Childrens Hospital in Dublin..... then why does the family need to send a child to England ....
Also can only the rich (like Minister's) afford to do this?

Possibly because we didn't have the facility to treat her here?

Bolix to where she was treated, it was their daughter, of course they are going to want her treated by the best, it just so happened that they had the financial power to have her treated somewhere else.

I don't know the family, I didn't know the girl, but my condolences to them.

she was treated in the brilliant crumlin childrens hospital before being transferred to great ormand street.

can someone please close this thread now before the stupid comments start or people start political nonsence.

    Empathy fail.
    Hurrah for the internet!

She was treated in Crumlin Childrens hospital and then due to the complicated nature of surgery required transfered to Great Ormond Street london. A common enough practice by the irish govt.

    I doubt any favors here.

I also cannot see why this should be discussed unless we all wish to wish Michael and his family our deepest sympathy.

Yeah this really isn't the best place for this.
Iirc, there is a thread in the Cork(?) forum for condolences.

Yes I understand that was the reason. It turns out she couldn't have the necessary surgery in the end, for some medical reason, and consequently died. The family also lost another child some years ago.

Yes I'd be the first to agree the govt have made a complete and utter balls of our health service, but i'm going to confine my post to expressing, condonences to the family in this instance.

I don't think speculation about the whys and wherefores are in very good taste.
Best keep that for a suitable thread imo.

cardiac problems only discovered in the last 2 weeks.

    Deepest condolences to them
Parents have many obligations to their children and things they should do, Burying them should not be one of them, one of the most heartwrenching things you can see is a parent's face after they've lost a child

hundreds of children from all over the world are treated at GOSH. it's no political reason to transfer children/patients to another country where the expertise already exists for certain treatment. pregnant women who caught swine flu in the UK were treated in sweden.
GOSH is an excellent training hospital for paeds. as is toronto in north america.

as plein de force said, the duties of being a parent should not extend to have to bury your children. ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.

Great Ormond St has a a world reputation for a reason
Start a thread in Health Sciences or Politics if you've a point to make.

It's quite sad and it's the second child they've lost.
