Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't think it's very funny. It certainly isn't something that's going to aid the recovery of the country. At what point does someone's frustration become an inadequate excuse for assaulting a politician? Cheering on this sort of childish behavior will only lead to someone taking it too far.. and I bet my bottom dollar that the same people calling the silly bint a hero wouldn't be so vocally supportive then

lol, class. I hear she tried to lick the paint off her neck thinking it was a ketchup covered sausage roll :)

Well done the paint "shooter" :)

Is pelting our politicians with paint the best we can do? Surely there are better ways to protest than to resort to resort to something a child would do.

I'm not a Mary Harney fan but thats another debate. Fair play to Mary for continuing on with the ceremony. Most would have walked away.

    Pity about her.
She is indirectly responsible for the suffering of many

    More of it I say.
Might make the fuckers feel the touch of the little people again.

Harney bashing seems to be very popular these days. I dont think she is the worst of them at all. She actually chose the Health portfolio when it was obviously completely unmanageable but she has stuck with it all along. None of the other ****ers would touch it with a barge pole

    Maybe.

Telling the government we want them gone hasn't worked either though. Maybe they need a more direct approach...

Not condoning the throwing of paint on her but I understand the anger directed towards her.

On a more serious note - who the hell from her team of advisors allowed her to go ahead with the sod-turning AFTER she was paint-balled? Anyone with even the most basic knowledge of PR and how the media works would know these pictures will be everywhere (globally) and unfortunately for Harney will become her legacy shot. Could they not have foreseen the "blood on her hands" headlines?

AND SHE'S PAYING THESE ADVISORS WITH OUR TAXES!!!!!

Retarded to do it, retarded to give it the thumbs up, even if people's anger is more than understandable. Resorting to thuggery just makes martyrs out of the government.

It was done by Councillor Louise Minihan, a member of the new republican socialist eirigi party which broke off from Sinn Fein over that parties support for policing in the North in 2006.

Its a pretty small group which specialise mainly in protest politics and stunts like climbing on top of or occupying Anglo Irish Bank buildings

Below is the statement issued from p.ie, but it's not on their website (www.eirigi.org) yet.
éirígí Councillor Louise Minihan released from Garda custody following Harney protest

éirígí Councillor Louise Minihan was released without charge from Garda custody at 11.30am following an anti-cutback protest aimed at the Twenty-Six County Minister for Health, Mary Harney. During the course of the protest Minihan poured diluted red paint on Mary Harney’s clothing.

Speaking after her release Louise Minihan said,
‘In one month’s time the government will introduce what can only be described as a blood budget. The cutbacks in healthcare that will be contained in that budget will result in the unnecessary and avoidable deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, of people over the coming years.

‘Today Mary Harney had the cheek to organise a publicity stunt at Cherry Orchard Hospital, where she was turning the sod for a long overdue mental health unit. This is the same hospital which has been starved of funding for years, where an entire ward for althzeimers and dementia sufferers was closed down during the summer.

‘The red paint that I used in today’s protest is symbolic of the blood that Harney, Fianna Fail and the Green Party have on their hands. Irish citizens are literally dying to satisfy the demands of the IMF, the EU and the money markets. The wealth of this country should be used to provide a first class health service that is open to everyone and not to bail out the private banks.

Louise concluded by calling on people to oppose December’s blood budget
‘All across the country, in Tipperary, Navan, Monaghan, Wexford and elsewhere people have taken to the streets in their tens of thousands to defend their local hospitals. All of these local hospital campaigns need to come together in the run up to December’s blood budget.

‘On budget day itself the people of Ireland need to get onto the streets in protest. People don’t need political parties, trade unions or other so called leaders to tell them what it wrong with this country and they don’t need political parties or trade unions to tell them to get onto the streets. The time has come to stop moaning and start building a real alternative to the right wing policies that got the country into the mess it is in. It’s time to tell the government and the rest of the political establishment that enough is enough. We aren’t going to accept their blood budget.’

That'd be my take on it too.

On the one hand it is retarded, shortsighted and thuggish.

On the other hand she really, really deserves to be publicly humiliated and much more. **** her and her advisors - all higly paid to explain how nothing is ever her fault and how in fact everything works and is in fact better than ever before. **** her.

She did the right thing - just smile and keep going.

Why? You can't blame her alone for a lack of funds. My mother worked in health and says Harney is a damn sight better a health minister than her predecessor (Cowen). The health service was ****ed and a disgrace before Harney arrived.

It's such sheep-like, drone-like bandwagon-jumping to bash her as health minister.

What would you guys do differently, with a lack of funds, lack of resources, the service already in sh1t, others to answer to?

Well (and perhaps a topic for another thread so I won't waffle daftly too much on...) he did manage to bring an empire to its knees, to a discussion table and got what he sought.

I accept however that time moves on and no circumstances stay the same so tactics might have to differ - but I'd rather they were peaceful ones.

"released without charge from Garda custody at 11.30am"

I know people give out about the Gardai releasing violent criminals, but on this occasion have they really let a violent criminal walk away free?

Released without charge does not mean that charges cannot be brought at a later stage.

She turned the health service into the HSE - a huge, overstaffed (with layers of management), inefficient bureaucracy, more interested in self-preservation, PR and spin than in treatment of sick people. She is now able to deflect all criticism and awkward questions to the HSE and avoid any and all political accountability for the mess our health "service" is in.
I know of a man who died on Saturday, a week after having a stroke. His first stroke should have been a minor episode, but he was left sitting in A&E for 6 hours waiting to be seen, even though he was brought in by ambulance. Eventually he was seen and admitted, but had a second more serious haemorrhage 2 days later which may have been avoidable if he had received prompt treatment for the first stroke. For all the HSE's advertising about quick treatment for stroke being vital, and how to spot the signs, it seems the advertising/spin is more important than the actual treatment.
A small example of how the HSE is a joke maybe, but another example of how it, and its creator Mary Harney, has blood on their hands. While you may not agree with the action taken, that photo has huge symbolic resonance for a lot of people.

I'm actually a bit surprised by reactions, I knew AH was a hornet's nest of reactionary thought and of unbiased begrudgery, but I thought people would be genuinely pleased to see Harney get a painting.

Whatever hang up you have about republicans, I think this was actually a well thought out and symbolic stunt. Cuts in the health service do cost lives and Harney constantly pissed away chances to improve and reform it during the "good times".

Along with Cowen as a bumbling, incoherent fool in Galway and Bertie in a fcukin cupboard demeaning the whole government.
