What about stickies, charters, some people's threads have gone on for 6 months or more...

And from a moderating POV, would it then still be possible to search a poster's history in PI - would make it extremely difficult to indentify trolls, multiple thread starters, and troublemakers in general.
These are barriers which can be overcome.

I'm not gonna argue - I agree that search should not be enabled on the forum in its current form. I'm simply suggesting possible alternatives.

However my own personal opinion is:
To be honest...... I still think it works how it is currently.

There is also the matter of tourists (Marla Singer types) and soap opera fans who, six month on decide to post things like "So how did you get on?" on thread with titles like "I'm thinking of having an abortion".

Whatever ones opinions on the subject, that is seriously uncool.

Not now, but a lot of people signed up and posted on PI and went on to use that username across boards.

I did that originally, work issue
Couldn't care less if someone went "digging dirt" on my original thread.
I asked for advice and got great, genuine replies back.

But I can see how some people would be bothered over it.
My issue wasn't exactly that personal or unique.

Victor has a good point above
You don't want old threads dragged up looking for updates

    Welcome to the internet!!

Seriously, if boards.ie is going to introduce forum by forum hacks to stop the Fight Clubbers of this world, it may as well close down AH etc.... Uncool, is hardly a criteria...., or is it?

"Welcome to the internet" while trotted out a fair bit is not really applicable as much as people think. This goes double for long standing internet users who pine for the "old days" and "free speech" etc. The internet is very wide ranging as far as what is acceptable to different people and sites and this has changed and is changing along with the demographic over time. Go back ten years and the Boards notion of "don't be a dick" was fairly unusual, now it's much less so and is more the template of today(and that will increase IMHO).

One size doesn't fit all in life, why is that an issue on the internet and why is that an issue on Boards? EG Boards ain't 4chan or Youtube. AH isn't Politics. The thunderdome isn't PI. Personal abuse/links to porn/trolling etc is frowned upon across this site. Is that a "hack"? AH doesn't allow posting pictures in thread. Is that a hack? Some forums are private, some aren't. is that a hack? Some forums enable anonymous posting, some don't. Is that a hack? Each community/interest/forum is different and each have their rules and vibe. Some more subtly than others. I don't see why this is hard to grasp

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Look, the mods over the years have decided to try and mould PI in one way or another. I have no opinion on how that has turned out, as I don't really take that much of an interest in the place, through one reason or another. It is as it is.

I've no real interest in whether search is turned on or off, and is actually not really my point. My point is that PI is as searchable from other search engines (including that big Google one on the front page), as it is with VB search option turned on. Albeit a small learning curve to do that, I doubt it's beyond the bounds of most people to figure it out.

I've no interest whatsoever in a historical analysis of why things are as they are here, or on other fora, and I also find those exercises are an exercise in futility, given one has one's own view on certain things, and it's almost impossible to be dispassionate when making these statements.

My bottom line, is as I have said above, I don't see why this is so hard to grasp  Now, I think I'll (finally) take my leave of this thread, as I see the circle is almost complete.....
