I'm looking to get a cheap Media Player that will accept a Hard Drive or USB stick or Memory card and play movies on my TV.
Can anyone recommend one either online or in a shop?

    Thanks

Bought a yoke called an NBox from ebay for about 30 euro. Seller was a guy down in Cork. It does everything the more expensive ones do, although the subtitle display on it isn't the best.

For the price, it's hard to go wrong with it. Works off USB and one of those skinny digital card yokies.

Maplins have the mini WD one for 49.99. Great piece of kit, the mini doesn't play HD like the bigger version but just about everything else. Would advise against most of those cheapo no-name ones, some are grand, but most are fairly shaky in terms of build quality and playback/features.

Just be aware, a lot or the cheaper boxes don't play mkv format

Another vote for the nbox. Loaded a harddrive with loads of tv shows / movies when I was in Denmark on work and it was the best €30 I ever spent. Comes with me everywhere now.
As people have said there are some things to be aware of, but for €30, you can't go wrong.

My bigest bug bear is that it sorts the files on the hadrdrive by date modified and not by filename. Pain in the arse until I figured it out, espcially as I would set it to play the next episode when last one was finished.

Do either of the ones mentioned here support mkv?

Maplins have a media player than uses internal sata drives

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=345476&OrderCode=A01JT#spec

Doesn't do mkv or HD files though.

Always works as a dock to connect to PC.

I bought a WD mini in Maplins for my parents. nice small unit, just need a separate hard drive to go with it.

Got the NBox yesterday. Have to say I am very impressed. Tried loads of different files on it and it played them all.
Got it on eBay from lacuna.ie and it arrived in 2 days too... Would highly recommend.

Haven't tried that. What type of file is that?

Its a compressed form of video file similar to AVI....its much smaller than AVI files.

Majority of the HD movies online are in MKV format

hmmm. I'll see if I can find one to test out tonight.

I have an Nbox but it won't play 720p even though it says it does!

    Can anyone tell me why?

It was converted from Mkv to avi and mpeg but won't work. Non file format something like that comes up

this is the files formats supported:

    File formats

    *.avi (720*576), *.mpg (720*576),

    *.mpeg (720*576), *.rm (720*576),

    *.rmvb (720*576), *.vob (720*576) and
