    today's galway indo:

Corrib site set to lie idle

The owners of the Corrib Great Southern Hotel have poured cold water on reports the site may be used to house GMIT students in the near future. Reports earlier this week indicated that Edward Holdings had received a request from the Dublin Road college to use the iconic site for student accommodation.

However, a spokesperson for Edward Holding confirmed that there is no immediate plan for the hotel to be changed into a student village.

“We have no immediate plan for the Corrib Great Southern Hotel site to be changed into student accommodation for GMIT,” said the spokesperson. “Any future use of the site will be subject to a planning process after the City Development Plan comes into force, which will not be enacted until next year, hence the delay.”
A plan to demolish the existing five-storey hotel and replace it with a two-storey research and development block and to use the current car park as emergency parking for the college was withdrawn by the developer in 2009.

Currently the hotel site is zoned for residential use only and the Galway Independent understands that these plans were withdrawn because a change to CI zoning was not possible outside the City Development Plan.
It is expected that the City Development Plan will be ready for implementation some time next year and, with a planning application pending for the site after that, no building work is expected to begin on the site until 2013 at the earliest, leaving one of the city’s gateway sites vacant for the foreseeable future.

When contacted yesterday, GMIT confirmed they “have no involvement in that application”.

The Corrib Great Southern would make ideal student accommodation for GMIT.
