Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry if this has been asked already, i skimmed the board a bit and didn't see anything that recent so hopefully not.
Are the RDF currently accepting recruits? I'm 25 and have always been interested in the military, looked at a cadetship in college but never went through with it. I'd like to give this a go though if at all possible.
I'm based in Dublin so hopefully there would be a bit of choice. Just wondering what it entails in terms of time commitment etc. I currently play rugby and train for that three nights a week is it likely that you'd have to pick one or the other if you were to do it or is the training more sporadic after your initial basic training?

This thread is worth reading (page 6 onwards contains posts from the last year)

    To quickly answer your questions:

Units are still recruiting, however there is a cap on applicants and many are being turned away. Check out rdf.ie and use the unit locator to see which units are training near you. Don't call them, go in on a training night and see. If there are several units close to you, check them out to see which will/can accept you as a recruit.

The time commitment is one evening per week and field days every few weeks. You'd probably be looking at one day or a weekend every 8 weeks or so with a week (two if you're lucky) of paid training in the summer. Nothing is mandatory but your training will suffer if you don't turn up regularly. Personally speaking, I would expect troops to turn up for 75% of field days and training parades - less than that and it just makes it harder to train both them and others.

thanks concussion. in terms of recruitment how are they selecting recruits. Is it a first come first served basis or would they be selecting based on fitness, strength etc.?

One would hope it would be based on aptitute but the long recruitment process (~3 months) means most units go on first come first served.

Starting recruitment in the late spring, with applicants in placed in a holding platoon and undergoing interviews in the summer, would be the best way of getting a high quality recruit platoon started in September. This alas does not seem to happen and so it's the usual rush in Sept/Oct to get paperwork and medicals sorted out before Spring/Summer.
