Anyone got any suggestions for where to get parts for 83/84 Renault Trafic
(actually it's a Winnebago leSharo, but based on a Trafic)

Or any recommendations for a mechanic / garage near Dublin that's familiar with old Turbo Diesel engine Renaults.

Specifically at the moment am looking for a speedo cable and bits for the window winder mechanisms.

    Hi guys,

I am definitely interested by parts too. I am driving as a daily a renault diesel trafic mk2.

    Cormac,

I am not a mechanic, but I might be able to help you.
Which kind of engine do you have in yours?
The turbo diesel was not setup in the trafic only the non turbo diesel was.

Which kind of problem do you have?

    ep71,

Do you know if the owner will be looking for selling parts of it?

I'm not having any engine probs at the moment, (apart from broken speedo cable). Am mostly looking to see if there are others on here with knowledge an / or parts, for when the need arises.

At the moment I'm battling with the window winder mechanisms.
The rail that the glass sits on has pretty much disintegrated on both sides.

I've tried a few guys parting out Trafics on ebay, but they say the glass is bonded to the rail and I need to buy both together.

Mine definitely wasn't bonded, the glass was just sitting in a rubber insert in the top of the rail. So am guessing there was a design change at some point.

I have a good renault 20 diesel engine (ex '80) 99k mls . Is this the same engine as the traffic?

All Mk1 Trafic window winder mechanisms do not have their rails bonded to the glass. It works on a compression fit principal where the glass is sandwiched between the rubber and the metal of the rail. The rubber binds against the glass keeping it in place. The runner is seperate and maybe still available as a new part from Renault. It is similar to the early Renault Master, R18, etc..
The Renault part number for the Trafic rail is: 7700665172 Both doors share the same part number. Window regulators for the Trafic are different and vary per chassis range. Send PM if you want full part list for all variations.

If I reckon correctly they are the same, it is 2.1 L isn't it?

I have a feeling Renotec knows a bit about renault :-)

    Cormac,

I have been looking in the past for trafic parts on the net without a lot of luck, or to the scraper.
I would say around best bet to get parts it is to find a guys which will have one park in his yard for years.
The last time I need rear bumper, I bring them back from France. There is a lot of them in scrap yard there.

Thanks, I'll try a Renault Dealer, looks like in Dublin that would be Bill Cullen.

Otherwise googling that part number shows companies in Mexico / Argentina that appear to be remanufacturing these parts.

I have fun keeping my father's 97 Trafic camper van on the road. Used to get bumpers, mirrors etc from a scrapyard that's now cleared.

When we needed a wing and bonnet after a recent prang we bought a whole ex ESB 4x4 van out of a farmyard for €50 and sent it to the scrapper when stripped. Last gearbox (it's third ) came from the UK and we struggled to find that.

Fell out with a local Renault dealer when he said the S8U engine in it wasn't original after getting the wrong parts in (typical main dealer, computer said no )

Feckin heap of French sh!te would have gone to the scrapyard long ago if it wasn't a camper

They are nice little van, mine is a camper too. :D They are nice french van, ;) they are quiet popular down there.
And there is still plenty of them on the road and in the scrap.

Probably being a little unfair I suppose, a nice enough van but it's been a maintenance nightmare. For example changing the front discs involves dismantling the front suspension and hubs and needs a press. As for having a clutch release that pulls instead of pushes, guess how we found that out!! Experts at changes gearboxes now

The weak gearbox (as said we are on number 3) seems to have driven most to an early scrapping, as a result parts are becoming harder to find here and to an extent in the UK especially as many scrapyards are forced to close. There used to be three 90s vans (along with a load of classics) in a yard behind a pub in Grangemockler but I believe it's been cleared now.

See a normal similar age Trafic around Cashel regularly, one day it's going to disappear down the back of our yard

There two in the yard here, not belonging to me but i reckon they will be scrappers alright. Ones a '93 and the other '81.

Still hard to find parts although many are available from Renault at extortionate prices.

A year on from my previous rant, the last gearbox recently packed up, that's number 4. After doing some research I found a single reference to replacing the input shaft when the clutch is changed. Turns out the shaft just unlatches and can be pulled out. It has a sleeve that goes over the main input shaft splines and is a sort of sacrificial part. There's different ones for each engine/bellhousing combo and of course ours was the most expensive at €220

Got it back on the road and the clutch fitted the previous year disintegrated two weeks later, another €200 down the pan. We can now do a clutch in under 4 hours, the Renault book time is 9 hours

While the rest of the story is massively frustrating, that part is class!

Perhaps ye can take the dubious title of "world's fastest renault traffic clutch replacement". A sort of strange little achievement that ye got out of it, yet by far not enough to make up for the horribleness of a very annoying van I presume.

Hopefully we'll never have to do it again. What's really frustrating is the number of gearboxes we've bought when all that was needed was to swap a shaft (with splines made from processed cheese ), there's a total lack of info and even the Renault specialist who did the first swap didn't know.

I didn't mention that the diff is water cooled so the coolant has to drained as well every time that box is dropped:rolleyes:

It's my father's homebuilt camper van that's his everyday transport, he's 83 and I don't suppose he'll be driving much longer. When he finally hangs up the keys, it will be stripped and scrapped.

Does anybody know where I could find two wheels for a Mk1 trafic? they are four stud wheels with 160mm PCD.
