Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

SEAI has launched a solar payback calculator. I put in my details and got a 9 year payback time for a 200L system. I assume this includes savings on upgrading your cylinder from an unlagged copper guzzler to a well insulated on as part of the installation. (it is a substantial chunk of the cost).

    Try the calculator here :)

    Hi

when you say you use 200L is that low or medium usage and is that 200L a day?

The 200L refers to the size of the cylinder. I put our household down as 4 people, medium use. Usually, if you want about 160L of hot water per day, you would use a 200L cylinder as the last of the water would be getting cooled.

BUT. I've done a bit more playing with the calculator. I switched the fuel source to gas, oil, electricity and they all came up with the same savings, even though the displaced fuel varies in price. There are a few bugs in the system by the looks of it...:o

ah ok 200L for 4 people makes a bit more sence ( I thought you might have a pet elephant! )

do you actually have a solar water heating system installed or are you (like me) just looking in
    to it?

I played around with it also and sometimes the figures never really changed and it would take me 16 years to recoup the costs which seems like a very long time. The system would probaly need to be replaced by then!

I have solar panels already. Was just snooping.

I'm afraid that calculator seems to be way out. Pity, because the graphics are pretty cool and so forth, but the important bit is the calculator itself.
