There has been quite an outcry about the importation of Brazilian Chicken in the last few years, whilst shopping in Lidl's this morning I picked up a box of chicken gourjons, it had a UK processing plant code, however on the packaging it clearly stated a Product of China, now how are chickens reared in China how and under what conditions are they slaughtered and then transported to the UK, are they unfrozen in UK and refrozen for the freezer, how many times does the poor chicken get frozen, any comments

First they are frigerated, then at their destination they are RE-frigerated.

That's where the term refrigerator comes from.

how many times can you freeze and then unfreeze chickens, with the strict regulation of food preparation and subsequent sale in this country, and the almost maniac approach to pricing, what do these so called food experts know about the rearing, slaughter, processing and transportation of foreign birds, the chicken trade is not over keen on the brazilian chicken as it undercuts the home producer, it may be there are similar products in the supermarkets we hope not, perhaps we could send the council on a fact finding trip

It should only be frozen once. You are not supposed to re-freeze stuff like this.

Thanks for the info, so how does this chicken get from China then get processed into gourjons and then to Lidl's freezer, it won't be fresh even if it flies into the UK, unless it is processed in China, then why would a UK processer number get shown on the packaging, not necessary unless there is something sinister going on to get round import laws, do we have first hand knowledge of conditions in China. I know Supervalu sell Tinned Chinese Strawberries which is almost covered up, so what else, be vigilant

Conditions in China are hard to verify. The recent Brazilian story related to beef, not chicken.

For a while in 2008 powdered baby formula was the most imported consumer item into China as many children had been affected by tainted dairy products.
Here's a recent story about it.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10565838

Generally what happens in China is that a scapegoat is fingered, paraded around the media and then executed and the authorities say "move on". Nothing changes and as in that news item the problem resurfaces again because standards weren't applied after the first instance.

The parallel with how Irish government deals with crisis is similar in that a scapegoat is fingered (it was Lehmans and the banks, not us, honest), a specialist committee is established appointed by who sings their tune, a report is expected in the future and some obese fellow with an unprofessional fondness for the gargle tells us we've "turned another corner, going forward."

Nothing changes. Only the consumer can change things.

BTW, I thought I'd try an experiment to see how long a chicken would last in a freezer, I put one in last night and it was dead this morning! boom boom!*

*No animals were harmed in the production of this seriously bad joke.
