Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some coverage in the irish times... sounds like an unusual situation.

a bit of sour grapes there by Hoy, he should just suck it up...

a bit of sour grapes there by Hoy,

You mean when asked for his observations by journalists he should simply say "no comment"?

I've seen his reported remards, and can find no suggestion of "sour grapes" anywhere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 85 ✭✭Moreofthatjazz

a little bit of humility would nay go astray... he fecked it up but his chest is still puffed up ... i know that what he says is true but for the coverage and the comment to be all about the loser and not the winner is just pissy, a clap on the back and get on with it should be the order...

"When you are up against an opponent who is one second slower, 99 times out of a hundred you know it's going to be straightforward and you don't want to waste energy because there is a lot of racing to come and if you smoke it and win by 50m it looks disrespectful,"

So no "well done Felix that was a great achievement for an 18 year old who is not a specialised sprinter and competing in his first major track competition as a senior despite still being a junior" then

Bit like sour grapes to me...

I don't know what he said to Felix - whatever it was, it was unlikely to make the reports

The statement quoted are simply the facts - Hoy was fastest qualifier, and English the slowest (and was knocked out in the next round)

Now if you want to say that Hoy did not show him adequate respect in the race, fair enough, but I don't see anything he said as amounting to "sour grapes"

    We'll agree to differ ;)
    In more positive news
Martin Irvine finishes 9th overall in the omnium with 5 out of 6 excellent events and a new national record in the Kilo (and in his the last event of the 6 in 2 days!!!)

And although all may be as pleased I'm delighted to see a British 1/2 in the keirin

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 77,702 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Irvine did brilliantly, particularly in the scratch race, where he was part of the first group (of 4) to gain a lap on the field. His 1k nearly ended in disaster, but he was given a 2nd chance after pulling his foot out of the pedal in his first attempt

In the Guardian article they describe Chris as Scottish, but when he wins they use British

British no.1 Andy Murray also become Scottish as soon as he exits Wimbledon. Go figure

Summary of Olympic Qualfication rules here, but basically he needs to do well in the major competitions over the next 18 months

The advantage of the new qualification rules is that there is no more than 1 rider per team, which means there can only be one GB, Aussie, French etc rider. I'm not sure how many places there will be in the Omnium, but there were over 20 participating in the Euros. If he can keep in the top 10 (on a one per nation basis) in Europe, hopefully that will get him a place in the Olympics

Thx Beasty, as he's very new to this then hopefully he can improve too. Spoke to his Oh last week and he's doing a world tour of events over the next month or two. Think he's twittering too

Well the world Cup is on in Cali and Melbourne before Christmas and then Beijing and Manchester.....

The field was good I cant think of many more guys who would frighten you but I am sure there are 1 or 2 out there but Martyn is a class act he will progress and working with Andy Sparks can only be a help...

Getting Andy Sparks on board was a real coup. I've a gut feeling Martyn has found his niche here. He had one bad event which cost him a much higher placing but beating the Kilo record in his 6th event over 2 days was simply stunning.
