Sorry if this is covered elsewhere. I have a new belgian malinois and think that I should put up signs to make people aware that if they open my gate they could meet my 6 month old pup. He is not aggressive.

Does anyone know if there are implications in relation to putting up a beware of the dog signs? A lot of different advice going about ranging from:
    a) if you have a sign up and someone enters your property and gets bitten then you are covered as they have been warned;
    b) you are acknowledging that you are aware that your dog could bite someone and therefore are liable.
Hopefully would never be an issue but any advice appreciated.

This one ;) You get loads of different signs nowadays though that don't implicate that your dog is dangerous along the lines of Rottie/Doberman/Labrador/Shih tzu . . . . lives here. Or please keep the gate closed types.

i would just be worried that if the gate opens like that and there is a sign saying there is a dog in there that it might get stolen ive herd so many horror storys of peoples dogs being taken from the garden as its a walk in front gate! not to put a negitive on your comment just becarful!

True, you want to be careful, tho I'd say belgian malinois isnt the easist dog to steal :D gorgeus breed, my neighbours used to have one! We have a sign saying "beware of dog, close gate" at the gate to our back garden, but nothing on the front gate, because she's always out at the back or indoors:cool:
Have thought about getting a sign saying "dogs running free" or something like that, not really saying that my dog is dangerous but then at the same time stating that there is a dog around?

I am a little paraniod about him being stolen and had not thought about a sign as highlighting that there could be a dog there to steal. Plenty of theft going on, would be heart breaking if that happened. I was kind of thinking of a sign that said 'BE AWARE OF THE DOG'. That sounds kind of safe, as from a distance would look like beware but is only notfiying people that a dog is there. Might be best of both worlds.

If your dog bites someone, even on your property, sign or no sign, you may be in serious grief as the dog can be designated as dangerous & be destroyed. It is a good idea to ensure that no one can open the gate by padlocking it. Also make sure that there are no gaps where a hand could enter & get bitten.

Personally I would not have a sign. Once sort alerts thieves & the other implies a dangerous dog.

I have a sign on my gate saying 'Dogs roaming free' because I wanted to warn people that if they came in my gate they'd be greeted by 6 dogs!

I think that sign is a nice comprimise between a warning sign or advertising what breed of dog lives there to dog thieves.

Agree with Sophia, dogs generally bark if anyone comes along so that's a good warning. Putting up a please keep gate closed sign is better because you don't want anyone leaving it open and the pup running off.

Saying that pop a lock on your gate if you are worried about your dog escaping or worried that a dog will bite, and then pop a little door bell on the gate so visitors can ring before they are let in, dogs even friendly ones can be territorial most are just big softies but some dogs just go nuts when someone calls depends on the dog and the training but also on how a visitor reacts.

Have him well socialised inside and outside the home so this isn't likely to happen.

I know it sounds a bit much treating your garden like fort knox but pups and adults dogs love to escape and make a run for it so might be worth thinking about.

We ended up putting up a sign because our garden is really long (about 4000ft!) and you can only see a tiny bit from the gate. What was happening was that people would come up the garden looking for us but not realising we had dogs, or so many and would suddenly be surrounded when they were well away from the gate. My dogs wouldnt do anything but bark but 6 dogs running towards someone tends to scare the sh1te out of them. So we figured it was fair warning so they knew we had dogs even if they couldn't see them

A guy living near my sister has 2 GSD's (beautiful animals and so friendly and well behaved) they have a sign on the door and the gate stating:

"This property is owned by German Shepards, humans may only enter with their permission" and a smiley face
    :)
