Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not really surprising, I fully expect MS to open Kinect dev up to XNA in the coming months. Should be interesting to see what people can accomplish in the meantime though.

How so? They cant make things hack proof.

They did, its not like the plugged the Kinetic into a pc and installed drivers for it.

No they didn't, and it wouldn't be called hacking if it was a case of just installing a few drivers.

Why would they actively try to stop this? Someone gets it working, then others go and buy a Kinect so they can use it on their PC and microsoft get extra money from sales they otherwise wouldn't have, without the obligation of having to support it.

Not to mention the fact that they could spent loads trying to prevent it only to eventually have someone hack it anyway so why waste the time and money?

they should try to stop it because microsoft will make the vast majority of their money on games not the hardware the chances are that kinect is being sold for very little or no profit its just once people have it they will buy new games for it

Most of the money is from games but I've seen nothing to say selling the kinect hardware is loss making.

They won't try to stop it the same as they don't try to stop using the controller with a PC, or Nintendo don't try to stop people using the Wiimote with a PC. It's not worth the hassle and they will potentially get more sales from it (even if it's not much money).

You also have the fact that if someone comes up with a good way to use it on the PC, MS will borrow the idea, bring out an official kinect for the PC and claim it was their idea all along ;)

And if the games are going to sell, they will sell, regardless of whether Kinect works on a PC or not. As long as Kinect is not loss making, and along with matrim I have seen no evidence to suggest that it is, then why would MS spend money to try and prevent this if taking the cheaper option leads to even a tiny additional market/profit? And as for matrim's example of the controller, not only do MS not try to stop the controller being used on a PC, they facilitate it!

TBH I think MS learnt their lesson on loss-making hardware with the original xbox, when people started using them for distributed computing and thus not buying games, so I suspect Kinect at worst breaks even, but more likely turns some profit so that if their costs fluctuate, they don't run the risk of being pushed into making a loss on it which could happen if it was only breaking even.
