Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

is it safe to remove some of the fans form a rack mounted PC, as it sounds like airplane, couldn't have it in the same room as you

its a spare machine and could put it to good use if wasn't so noisy, so is it safe to remove some of the fans? would it greatly reduce its performance?

    the specs are

rackmount Dual xeon server with 1tb storage, and sata raid system
    4gigs of ram
    windows xp pro.

    thanks for reading this.

Um, seeing that the fans are necessary to keep the machine and processor cool I'd suggest replacing them rather than taking them out completely!

A good cleaning might be all it needs!

Not a chance. I would be surprised if it even booted after disconnecting them, let alone the damage it would cause.

The only cooling in a rackmount server is due to the fans pulling air across all the components. All the heatsinks will be passive and there's almost no ambient cooling due to the tight space. Expect it to fail if you remove the fans.

thanks for all the feed back and quick reply's

would it be an option to replace the fans with quieter ones?
    and are these expensive?

    cheers

sure you can remove the fans...

If you want to melt the server that is. Servers run alot hotter than desktops and need plenty of fans to pull cool air across the internal components else it will just fail

Rack mounted equipment should be designed to operate in 40 degrees C ambient
(if it is not rated to 40C then it's not really designed to go in a rack)

check the BIOS for fan settings - some people set the fans to max,. but there may be an option to have the fans only when it's hot - update to the latest BIOS too (though for some DELL desktops/laptops this makes the fans louder in an attempt to prevent pre-mature aging of the PC through over-heating)

get software that can monitor the temperatures, the CPU is a given but you do need to know the motherboard too (doesn't hurt to look at HDD temps)
So make sure you have all the server utils installed - lots of reporting - if you can't get an XP version try 2003 and then 2000

    This won't apply
A thing I have done in the past for some equipment that I know will never be in a warm room - with fans with two wires is to wire them in series so that each only has 6V across them , fans then run much quieter - not recommended , and don't do for fans with more than two wires or fans that have more than just on/off control
