started to die down in the past hour.

7-8pm was when the winds peaked here.

PS... thanks to some of you who contributed to the storm live blog and gallery today.

The Weather Channel just tweeted my website. Must be a slow news day

Great job Wolfe, the live blog was a very good idea.

It ain't over yet ...Finner still reporting 130 km/h gusts in the last half hour

(and the hedge next to our house (in Sligo) is still making freight train noises :D)

    AA roadwatch:
*DONEGAL/SLIGO* Gardai are urging motorists throughout counties Donegal and Sligo to avoid making any unnecessary journeys due to high winds and extremely wet weather. Driving conditions are hazardous with reports of fallen trees and debris on many routes this evening. *N16/SLIGO* There are a number of trees down on the N16/Manorhamilton/Sligo Rd. The Council has been informed.

Belmullet folk don't always let visitors escape  look what they did to the Whale that washed up in Erris:

It's still pretty bad here too - it has eased to an extent, but the sea is as rough as it was all day and the wind is still fairly bad, with big gusts now and again.

I think Jim Fahy on the news was basing his opinion that it had all ended in the West / North West on what looked like calm weather he was filiming in in Galway.

Thought it was a brilliant idea, have a buddy who would have been up for it had I thought of it or even seen the thread earlier on it. Not in the same part of the country but in the mid-west. Funny thing is that we were only discussing the storm chasers in the USA but never even considered such an outing here

Well done to the guys for getting out there and doing it.

=Oscar Bravo;68977829.A fairly big tree was blocking station road in Foxford earlier, dirversions etc in place.

i drove up to the station @18:00 . no tree between foxford and the station. must have been around the woods at the lake.

due to budgetary constraints at RTE jim was filmed against a blue screen containing stock footage from the volvo ocean race arrival in galway last summer. well that's how it looked.

At least the other reporter had the brain wave of visiting the RTE front lawn with a half dead tree behind her waving in the wind. And who said RTE couldn't do drama!:p

My sky tv is on the blink now due to wind. This doesn't happen very often. (north co Dublin)

We are still having really strong gusts here in Limerick, I have made 2 attempts in the past twenty mins to try and get the wheelie bin upright....stays up for about 5 mins and then is blown over by the gusts. I have now just wedged it flat between a wall and a gate and it can stay there :D

It was Xmas Eve 97, an amazing storm for the south.

Weather is fairly quiet in the Limerick area at the moment. Still pretty breezy. It looked like we escaped the brunt of the storm today. Reading about the storm chasers from the boards.ie heading west. I hope they had a good day out. There is nothing like looking at the boards for comprehensive coverage of major weather events.

No change in donegal , still violent out there.
It will be interesting to see what the damage will be like in the morning once light sets in.

Yup, it shut down my Santa early.

Douglas Village SC: Was doing the photos and went to lunch when the wind came up, I went back to the hut to see the roof gone over it, had to evacuate Santa and close it down.

His hut was a sorry site after a short while and the adventure continued afterwords as I had to take one of Santa's helpers home. Roads blocked everywhere, went up one avenue lined with trees and got my charge home safe.

Went looking at the damage the next morning in daylight and that avenue we had gone up had every tree from each side knocked down over each other, like the winds blew one way, did a 180 and knocked the others on top.

    Scary.

    Guys,

Myself and Iancar29 just reporting from the top of the Menawn mountain on the Achill Island (464m ASL). It's unbelievable here (no worries, not so windy when driving up, we know what we're doing). It seems like steady 100mph around here now, freakish screaming around. The sea is crazy around here. Here's a few pictures, we'll be heading towards Belmullet now. Many more pictures/videos to follow when we get home tonight.

P.S. Wish you were here :)

Just thinking that if they didn't leave Mayo till 7 or after then it could be a slow journey home + quick bite to eat, quick report to family/friends, load all their material onto computer, resize etc..... my reckoning is we should hear from them soon enough  hopefully!

    EDIT: They're Baaaaackkkkk!

We're back now, arrived at Maynooth about an hour ago.
We actually never made it to Belmullet as it got dark before we left Achill Island.
We've posted the pictures sitting in a car by the masts on Menawn, after posting them the winds actually got stronger; it started to sway the car a bit and we actually had problems opening the car doors (car facing the winds). The wind has nearly knocked us off feet a few times within the next few minutes, and the howling from the masts was like from a horror movie.
We've waited for it to come down a bit and drove down to the beach at Keel, if was crazy windy there as well. I have never experienced winds so strong in my 28 years of life.
We drove back through the Atlantic Drive, just as it was getting dark, and we have noticed a sudden increase in wind speeds, it felt nearly like at 400m ASL an hour earlier. There was a place at the drive where the salty foam covered the ground making it look like it was under 1ft of snow.
It was very hard to make any pictures or movies as one could barely hold anything steadily in hands, and the camera lenses were constantly lashed with salty water. My car is probably going to be white in the morning.
We have seen a few downed trees during the day, but nothing major, I have to say there wasn't much disruption on the roads as we were driving.
Will post some short HD video shots tomorrow, tired now, I'm taking a shower and heading to bed - I'm not impressed by the current weather in Maynooth given what I've witnessed today.

Thanks to Iancar29 for a great companion, it's a pity we've had 2 empty seats in the car!

EDIT: thanks for the concern lads, good to know some of you were wondering if we're ok!

First job tomorrow: Give it a damn good wash, especially underneath and in all the nooks and crannies there.

Otherwise you'll be looking at a rustheap come spring time

Yup, aware of that, I was hoping to find an open car wash along the way but no luck. The car will get some love in the morning!

Very liitle happened here, some moderate gusts, not very high sustained wind speeds, altogether very disappointing!

Although the farm gate nearly blew off its hinges during a strong gust round 6 this evening, i let it go accidentally when i was tying it, it bounced of the pillar so hard i thought it must have been broken!!!

Drive through a couple of puddles ( in Kildare not Achill) at high speed tomorrow and that will sort the underneath out with a freshwater high pressure spray.

Still quite gusty here. As was said it will be interesting come first light.

    Excellent day though !

Fair play lads - keep it up and hopefully more people will join the adventure next event, it could snowball into something big with people from all over the country chasing the weather.

Btw, I know what you mean about the car and the salt, when I was at the beach the amount of salt spray blasting onto the car windows and drying in the wind was leaving a thick white residue that was like snow, I had to use nearly all my windscreen wash resevoir.
