OK, here's a couple of short videos shot yesterday on Achill, Iancar29 will be probably posting his today at some stage. The quality of recordings is very poor, but in those conditions it was hard to stand upright in one place not to mention trying to hold the camcorder steady. I'll need to read a bit on how to shoot in such conditions before the next chase.

As Mace Head was grabbing all the headlines at this time yesterday, I thought it might be interesting to point out that the name derives from the Irish word más, meaning buttock (or broad elevated area)! It sure did have its ass to the wind alright!
The name Mace comes from the Irish word Más meaning buttock. In place names, it indicates a broad and elevated area. To the east and south-east of the site, it is indeed broad and elevated (elevation ~30m above MSL). The area around Mace Head is generally wet and boggy with a lot of exposed rock. The main rock type is granite (Biotite granodiorite, age ~400 millions years). The soil type is mainly peat. Soil depth is generally shallow, varying from a few centimeters to several meters (usually shallower on hill slopes and deeper on flatter ground where it overlies hollows). There are very few trees, other than some conifer plantations consisting mainly of sitka spruce and lodgepole pine. None of these plantations are close to the site. Vegetation consists mainly of grasses, sedges, ferns, rushes, gorse and heathers. The area is hilly (average height ~35m). There are a lot of small lakes, most of them in bogs and rainwater-fed. Agricultural activity in the area is limited to grazing of sheep and cattle. Some agricultural burning of gorse occurs during the spring. Occasionally, plumes will pass over the site and affect the measurements made; however, as this burning generally only occurs during calm periods, the disruption is minimal. The other main source of income is fishing (lobster, crab and scallops) and fish farming (salmon). Lobster pots are set close to the site, ~500m offshore, however boat traffic is minimal and does not seriously impact on any of the sampling programs here. All the local fish farms are located outside the clean sector and their activities also appear to have little or no impact on our operations.

Interesting info on the Research Site here

Looks like the next depression may spawn in Baffin Bay tomorrow and head this way for Tuesday/Wednesday, but it's not looking much at the moment, hardly merits a mention.

As Su says, nothing that merits a mention really. You'd have to dig around fairly hard to find a straw to clutch to at the moment.

no photoshop here. Naugto's pic of 'devastation' also contributed to mention for website in metro Herald today.

Thanks again guys for all the help and well done to everyone that contributed on boards yesterday. Special mention for ian and winger who I am sure are priming themselves to take over Storm Chasers series. Could have an Irish one - 'Mild Muck Chasers'
