Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Canon 5D - Help needed

I had a loan of my brothers 5D and was changing the lens. When lens was off, I gently placed the body face down on clean surface to avoid dust. Then I heard the sound of plastic falling off. Does anyone know what it is and how to put it back where it belongs? I don't think anything is broken as the plastic bit is intact and nothing else fell out.

I cannot find the same problem on the internet as I do not know what this part is called. I know that the mirror is known to fall out due to adhesive failure and Canon have been very good to repair them out of warranty.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Looks like it's the focus screen thats out?

have a look here, someone will be able to put it back for you, there is a guy posts on here whose username escapes me at the moment (Zerohamster) repairs cameras, he'd probably be able to do it.

That looks like it is the problem. Thanks for that. If anyone can repair this, let me know.

If you give me a ring I will talk you through putting it back in (if you have a stady hand and an attention to detail it shouldnt be hard) but if you arent confident then dont try it because you could cause expensive damage to the camera.
I do repairs also if you are not confident and it is a tiny fix to put it back in place if you know what you are doing :)

The only thing that puzzles me is why it just fell out, did you put the camera down hard?

Ill PM you my number now. :)

Thanks to Nilhg I knew that it was the focussing screen. I followed a load of links which made it look complicated until I came across this YouTube video instruction. The only 'special tool' that I had to hand was a tweezers but I went ahead and did the replacement. It's now working okay again. All advice really appreciated : )

Judging by the photo you posted, that focusing screen looks to be in pretty bad shape. They are very sensitive to scratches, dirt etc...

I wouldn't be surprised if you can now see a lot of gunk while looking through the viewfinder.

I'd recommend taking it out again and giving it a blast from an air blower (not canned air) if the viewfinder is in fact looking a bit dirty now.

I to had replace my focusing screen because of dust and scratches that I just could not get rid of myself recently, but I ended up also having to clean the mirror, focus display and the pentaprism. It all went fine, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone with shaky hands.
