anyone know what story is with the derelict part of the apartment building across the sluice gate on the Friars' River below King's Gap? it's a lovely spot and just wondering why it's all boarded up.

Former chemical factory, Hygeia. Probably too expensive to clean up and redevelop even during the bubble.

thanks SB but I was referring to the apartment building across the river from there! ;) ..though I had forgotten about the name of that chemical company (ah, good times when they could pollute and just walk away without liability!) ..pity about that site, could be a gorgeous spot

yep that's the one. so as you're walking from O'Brien's Br. towards Salmon Weir Br. it's on your right across the sluice gate. favourite spot for Buckie fans by the looks of it. place inside looks like it was used at one stage going by the wiring etc inside

The Kenny Group built it IIRC . Note the walkway and bridges to Bowling Green is all locked up which would seem dodgy , it was supposed to be a right of way to the riverside.

That place was certainly occupied maybe 3 or 4 years ago and before then, it dates to the mid 1990s and perhaps the Buck finally did for it after An Bord Pleanála did for it 10 years ago. Any bottles inside or are they just around ??

spot on, thanks for that SB. sounds like the devs were trying to pull one with a weak junior planner and got slapped down. it's still a pity nothing can be done with the space from a civic point of view. as for the broken buckie bottles, there's some inside and some around and in the millrace

ah no, I think the rest of building is fully occupied alright. just sent Kenny's an query to see what they're planning on doing with it, though reckon their focus might be elsewhere!

God, I fkin hate these new names for the waterways around Galway. It stinks.
They're renaming existing rivers, streams and mill races, for what, to make them sound more quaint? GTFO. Friar's river is no river. Appreciate your fkin history, council fcuks.

true, but according to Kenny's permission in 1992 they were meant “prior to the occupation of any of the proposed residential units, the proposed working industrial exhibition area shall be refurbished, restored and provided with working artefacts or models to interpret its role in the operation of water power on this site in accordance with detailed plans which shall be agreed in writing.” so this bottom unit was always treated differently as part of their permission and at this stage it looks pretty derelict IMHO

    Slight overreaction maybe?

On a separate note, what is the big grey house/building across from the river from there, in particular, across from Born?

So if you're standing on the Salmon Weir Bridge, it's on the right as you look towards O'Brien's Bridge.

Is it something to do with the Fisheries or something?

At first I thought you meant the old Hygeia factory, but maybe you mean the County Club?

The former is derelict. The latter isn't.

this is the 1999 planning file for anyone interested.. http://gis.galwaycity.ie/WebDocsViewer/Results.asp?file_number=99748 . it looks like a nice idea if it was built as per the plans, like a mini version of the Bridge Mills
