ive just found a young hoggie, id say its about 4/5 months old going on the size, i know its very unusual for a hoggie to be out and about during daytime. i have given it some tinned dog food, water i have it in a box in the shed with straw and leaves, is there anythng else i should do,????
should they not have hibernated by now?

Let it go where you found it. They'll hibernate when they're good and ready.

They have to be over a certain weight to survive the winter, it may have been trying to find food.
Hold on to it for now and feed it cat or dog food, there are a few places that take them and over winter them, if I can find a link I'll post it.

    There's a few threads about it;

Great bit of info on that last site, have you a set of scales to weigh it?
found under the common conditions tab,
    OTHER

    Too underweight to hibernate
Clinical Signs – usually those born in late litters Aug-Oct, weighing less than 500g at end of November
    Diagnosis –weight
Treatment – check for underlying disease. Keep indoors, feed up. Take outdoors to hibernate if reach 600g, leave food available in case they come out of hibernation. Otherwise keep warm (18-22C) to prevent them from hibernating, feed up and release in April/May depending on weather conditions
Comments –Usually hibernate between January and March.

    Out during daylight hours
Clinical Signs – found walking around during the day
    Diagnosis – history
Treatment – must be taken into care to discover cause.
Comments – strictly nocturnal. Possible causes – blind, hungry, sick, injured, orphan

Hedgehogs weighing less than 600g often don't survive hibernation so if you can weight him. If he's under that you could drop him into Dogs Aid to spend the winter there, they do hedgehog rescue too. If he's over 600g and has eaten then I'd let him go at dusk. They can eat any cat or dog food but not fish based ones

This might help you its from tv3 pet the vet talking about a hog this week.

They should be in hibernation mode and as the other poster said hog needs to be 600g
