Went down to the christmas market yesterday with my girlfriend. Had a walk around and tried some of the food. I thought it was nice and it got us into town early in a saturday which we havent done in ages.

O and guess what ended up down the galway Market so we could get the potato curry.

I think the market will be good for town as it will get more people into town for a look around.

Anyway if local businesses were running it every food stand would probably be doing kebabs

ya, TURKISH kebabs - wonder if some posters will have a problem with this too. or maybe they will tell us that they are "irish kebabs, like their grannies used to make" LOL

just to re-iterate - watch your bags. I went up there on Friday afternoon when only about ten stalls were open - the amount of shifty looking people at that time was surprising - I had my rugsack swopped from my back to my front in record time. It was very uneasy - even at that time of day before the place was even officially opened. Never got that feeling of being watched before in Galway.

I think people will come for the attraction and leave thinking Galway is a rip-off! We'll see in a few months time.

Many years ago I went to the Christmas market in Stuttgart, whilst the scale was in a different league you certainly paid a premium for food, drink etc and similarly I remember going to the equivalent sort of thing in Edinburgh and thought that a fair bit of it was on the pricey side,

But what it didnt do is leave me thinking that Edinburgh or Stuttgart themselves were a rip-off. If people really equate an event like this to normal prices then they need a reality check

If I go to what is essentially a tourist event I expect to pay more than normal, and that applies the world over not just Ireland.

Did not get a chance to go there yet myself, what are conditions like under foot is it muddy.

The pathways use the existing paths, so they're not muddy. There is a bit of mud infront of most of the stalls but it's easy to avoid.

I'm quite impressed with it so far, there's a nice atmosphere down there and the food is good. I got one of the pulled pork sandwiches on Friday, the inside was lovely but it was served on a cheap burger bun which I didn't like. On Saturday I had one of the Bratwurst, which was good and nice and filling for a fiver. Also had a chocolate and coconut pretzel which was seriously filling and yummy.

Went to this today, nicely timed, got there at about 2pm so it was nice and busy but with plent of room to walk around and stop and dawdle at things.

Tried to taste as much as possible and did pretty well, two of us shared an ostrich and kangaroo burger, bought impala burgers to take home, had pork bun with stuffing, potato spiral, mulled wine, danish pancakes aka poffertjes (sp?), donut, and a tonne of french baked goods and chorizo, pesto etc brought home for later.

Got some lovely Christmas presents for people, had great chats with some of the stall holders, God I loved it. Everything we got was pretty reasonable value, the mulled wine was a bit dear but was genuinely lovely so I didn't mind, and the presents I got were really nice and pretty cheap.

The Beer Tent smelled of stale beer and depression though, a handful of drunks and students in there, but in fairness it was a Monday afternoon :p

mccambridges has a stall there - also there is the Irish language teddy bear stall (from moycullen).
And Athenry foods. There is a good few Irish stalls round.

Just dont get the Dutch Donuts. First bite lovely, completely raw in the middle. Macaroons are highly recommended though!

Sounds like most Galway pubs at that time of day.

Dutch Flowers (Salthill) have a lovely looking stall there.

Went up there after work today and was happily surprised. While some prices were high-ish, some were excellent.

Went to the pork sausage seller, who also had very nice wooden bowls for a tenner (and the guy there was a bit of craic). Avoided the beer tent, but ended up in the marque with the wooden animals opposite it. The lady there said that they had a large number of breakages by children which went unpaid for.

The bratwurst stalls with the big gridles looked the same as the ones in Germany; I'm really looking forward to sampling their wares.

I hope that it does well. The whole beer thing had put me off the market, but from what I saw this evening it looked a lot better than I had imagined.

Nah, that particularly sad combination is usually reserved for Sunday mornings, before proper cleaning/airing. :) I actually find afternoons in Galway pubs the most pleasant time.

That's the weirdest reaction I've heard to cupcakes, and I hear a lot :)

Just don't buy their mini cupcakes, very bad value compared to the regular cupcakes. I haven't tasted them but if I was going to I'd want value for my money!

Agree completely, it was gross, it tasted like a deep fried bun, bleh.

we went this afternoon at around 1, I got a venison burger and my husband liked the bite he had so much he went and got one too (he was originally going to get a sausage)

I thought things were actually reasonably priced apart from the sweets, and I shouldn't be eating so many of those anyway. We got some religious pictures from the belarussian convent stall (set of 2, about 8x10, "gold" and medieval style) for my mother in law's christmas gift, she's sorted now for €20. Brilliant.

We went to at least half a dozen christmas markets last year in Vienna & Prague and to be honest I think Galway's is cheaper, and has a larger variety (the stalls in Vienna were pretty much: Large Gingerbread Hearts on ribbons/German Sausage/"Punsch"/Wooden Toys/Chestnuts & Roasted Nuts over and over and over again. Now, we enjoyed looking at it all but after a few markets we were beginning to wonder if there was ever any other sort of stall at those things)

We were in yesterday, at one of the jewellery stands there was a ring marked "55". Wifey was gonna go for it, only to be told 'oh no love, thats the sterling price - I could do it for 65 euro as a favour'. I'm open to correction, but nothing there to indicate its sterling prices. Needless to say we moved on and gave our business elsewhere, thought it was a bit cheeky meself.

Had a roast hog baguette for my tea (€7). Im stuffed and it was delicious. I could eat a bag of that damn crackling!

That is well dodgy they shouldn't be allowed advertise a sterling only price. I think she was trying to upwards haggle you or something, glad you didn't pay!

Indeed, there are some very yummy looking things: am just hoping that the office temping market picks up in the next week or two so I feel rich enough to spend some money! ... eating 'roo always feels so right ;)

Was down in the market for the first time this evening. Was there the evening it opened but was only passing through the square.

Not quite as much in it as I had expected, but the square is only so big. I had already eaten so I didn't really sample much. Just went in for an Erdinger and had a German doughnut after. Was nice, but very very greasy.:)

    Something different anyway.

There were a good few things I'd like to try another evening when I have an appetite.

Among the food stalls does anyone know if there are any specialising solely in vegetarian / vegan produce?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Dont think there is anything just for veggies. Closest I found was the potato/mushroom guys and the Pizza stall. I think the stuff in the biscuit/nut place across from the beer tent is prob veggie but not vegan.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,650 ✭✭✭cooperguy

There was vegetarian options on some of the stalls and some were probably vegetarian by default because they are selling stuff like macaroons but I cant remember any specifically vegetarian or vegan stalls

Are they the best in the world as advertised? :D

Was in there Sunday evening and Monday afternoon.
Some cool things in there and it's different.
Spent Monday in the beer tent with a few friends who were off work. Not a bad way to spend a Monday.

I just noticed that on the Galway Christmas Market website they have this highlighted at the bottom, drawing attention to the regular market. I think that's a nice thing to do.
Be sure to visit and browse the superb weekly Galway Traditional Market which takes place in the area bordering St. Nicholas' Church. Usually open on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, this Christmas it will be open every day from December 14th through to December 24th. With over 100 stalls - art, craft, flowers, fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, hot and cold food etc., it's not to be missed! The Traders would like to thank all our customers and visitors for their continued support.
