    think its sirius your looking at although i thaught its in the east now so maybe im wrong..

    Low in the horizon, and Due South in the evening, Then it is Jupiter as it is the brightest object in the sky from space at the moment, can be seen in with any city lighting.

    It depends on what time you saw the item. At this stage, by the time darkness falls, Jupiter is quite high up, though towards the southeast. Sirius does rise until much later. The best guideline for identifying Sirius is using Orion's Belt, and follow it down to the left. Orion is unmistakeable. It is towards the south. Look at this diagram of Orion. Sirius is at the bottom left, on the edge of the diagram. Given the time of your post, it probably was Sirius that you saw.
