Vessel Arklow Raider went aground last night in those winds off Drogheda, they tried a refloat this morning but not joy.
He was describing the winds last night as violent and very uncomfortable !

The poor Pilot from Drogheda is stuck on the ship also as its too rough to get him off !
Comms and Live Map here, http://ei7dar.com/ais.html

Just look at the mouth of the boyne river and you will see him, have a listen whenever next high tide is this evening

Pretty wild here at the moment, as it has been all night.

Very windy indeed and overcast with patchy rain. I took a drive over to the East coast at Donaghadee and the sea is amazing looking there - full of foam and big waves crashing over on to the coast road :D

Also saw the coastguard about to head out - madness being on a boat out there at the moment.....

I see an advisory has been issued for more heavy rain here tomorrow - possibly as much as 3 inches :
There is a moderate risk of severe weather affecting Northern Ireland. There is the potential for persistent rain with local totals 50 to 80mm falling onto already saturated ground.

Issued at: 1045 Wed 17 Nov

Was there much flooding around Ireland? Heard some reports on AA Roadwatch.

Just drove from Killarney to Cork. There are a few trees down a long the way but what was striking was the amount of land underwater. Several rivers burst their banks. Strange considering how low they were when I was driving down there a couple of days ago!

The rainfall rates from Felice yesterday evening were enhanced by a process called Front Intensification by Jet, whereby the jetstream crossed the occluded front at an angle, causing upper divergence and hence upward motion in its left exit region. This, in conjunction with rich sub-tropical moisture (dewpoints up to 10°C), led to enhanced convective rainfall along the front in the south and west.

This water vapour image from 1800UTC yesterday contains an overlay of the 300hPa isotachs (in m/s), showing the jet crossing the front at an angle to the south of Ireland. The white area circles shows where upward motion is enhanced, and as this advected northwards, brought heavy rain to the south and west.

Three stations got the top gust of 108kph (67mph/58kts) - Roches Point, Cork Airport and Valentia, with Belmullet and Malin Head following a close second on 104.5kph (65mph/56kts).

The same three stations won the rainfall award too, with Cork Airport on 29mm, Valentia on 26mm and Roches Point on 23mm.

    Full summary here

The windows were bending in far further than I have seen them in a long time last night, around 2-4am was brutal.

Just to add my thanks to the weather forum crew for such a comprehensive job tracking this event, maybe title can now be edited to read low, risk of intense storm. :D

I would consider it an intense storm for much of Munster, so a fairly large part of the country was impacted, and the east coast got a late taste of the storm's potential before it began to degrade.

Interesting to follow a satellite 12-hour animation to see the counter-clockwise loop that the low has performed out near M6 buoy, and although it continues to weaken, this will sweep some slightly stronger gusts back around towards Clare and Galway, possibly Kerry, in the next few hours. These gusts will probably stay between 40 and 50 knots so nothing like the intensity yesterday, but the last act for this slowly dying storm.

For the record, it would appear the lowest central pressure yesterday was about 966 mbs and now it has filled to about 973 mbs.

Really windy again here in the north east tonight. Not as bad as last night but definitely touching a gale in the gusts and it's just started raining.
Funny because today was calm, but the wind has really gotten up since about 5pm.

Not sure if I'm posting in right thread, but wind and rain defo picking up again here tonight, doesn't sound quite as bad as last night but I wouldn't like to be out in it.

Rain and very stormy here. That ship, Arklow Raider is still aground at the Boyne estuary, 2 tugs tried to pull her off at high tide. Doesn't sound too great out there right now.

Good gusts here along the coast in Louth again.
I think the wind last night was stronger here with this system than the ones we got last week.

Looks like the gales have pushed Arklow Raider further to shore, someone said he cargo was Cement !!
Refloat attempt tomorrow at 07:00 so might be worth a listen http://ei7dar.com/ais.html

Forecast is not great though, any idea what the forecast for the weekend may be like wind wise for the Drogheda area?

Haven't been on really all week, but last night had very strong wind and heavy rain. Much stronger than the last storm last thursday for this part of Kilkenny anyway. Lots of trees down this morning and a very big flood on the river!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 347 ✭✭isle of man

have got a lot of wind again now.
we have had 60mm of rain in about 11 hours

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,514 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Hopefully they float that ship off on Friday because weekend winds likely to be SE to ENE force 4-6 or 20-30 mph. But working in their favour, higher tides coming with full moon on Sunday 21st. Friday might be the easiest day in terms of wind as it comes around a bit more to S.

Same here about 12 mls NE of you. I'm close to the foothills of Mt Leinster here, and its usually great falling asleep to the sound of the wind, but last night was just scary.

Gone calm here and the high waves have abated. The Arklow Raider is stuck fast, 2 large tugs tried in vain to get her off this morning with no luck and yes, she is carrying a cargo of cement. No activity since around 10 this morning, reckon they will try again tonight, she is very close inshore, hope they can float her off.

Just to keep an eye on the winds in southern Greenland tonight and tomorrow as the pressure gradient becomes extremely tight as a low to the south pushes up against the cold-core high over the Greenland glacier. The Danish Met office are forecasting up to Force 11 winds in the area. Already 40kts at Narsarsuaq at midday today.

Looking at those winds in Greenland, Narsarsuaq Airport is up to 59 gust 76 knots in the latest report! A windy night for all the population of just 158!
