Going to Westport Fri night, staying in the Carlton Atlantic.

Any recommendations where to eat (we'll have 2 kids with us, boys 7&9)?
What's The Sheeben like? is it within walking distane of the hotel?

Any tips for thing to do on Sat?
Nothing to expensive, we're on a budget (so that rules out Westport House!).

    Thanks

The shebeen is near the Carlton Atlantic.....though the road is narrow....may not be a runner especially in the dark. Stand to be corrected, but don't think there is a footpath. The hotel is in the Quays area, which is outside the town. The helm bar and restaurant is nearby with decent grub. Not sure if the asgard is open or not.....

Things to do.....Climb croagh patrick! The Mulranny greenway may be an option, see here -

Achill is nearby...pop out to Mulranny park for grub/dinner on Sat.

Don't forget to bring the rain gear....its that kind of weather!:)

    Enjoy...

Restaurants in Westport more expensive than any similar sized town in the country . . . the world, in fact. But the town is great for socialising. If you are looking for something to do, then head to Newport and try cycling the great western greenway to Mulranny and back. About 24 miles round trip. Cost of bike hire in Newport is a bit pricey, €12 an adult. Don't know what the kids are charged.

Mango's on bridge street in the town... and Fishworks(part of the atlantic hotel) and The Helm, both out in the Quay are lovely places to eat.

I would agree that Westport is a far more expensive place to eat out in but by the very same token, the standard of food and service in Westport is far far better than any other town I have ever went to.

Things to do, meh, I don't know? When I went on holidays as a kid (always in Ireland), I used to enjoy going to the cinema. So that might be worth looking at...

If you have a car then maybe you could visit Turlough House just outside Castlebar, it's about 25 mins away from Westport and it's free! There is a modern museum building alongside the original house. Loads of trees for the kids to run around and climb.

Dec2552, once again you are claiming that Westport restuarants are expensive - you now say most expensive in the world? OTT?

Westport is a far busier centre than most similarly sized towns, with a more extensive range of restaurants than most similarly sized towns.

My own experience and that of many I have spoken to is that there is good value in Westport.

The Helm restaurant is just down the street from where you are staying and it's great for good food and is well priced.
I'm not from the area but it's always the place we go to when in Westport.

I can testify to the Helm having the cleanest kitchens, the finest chefs and the highest standard of food anywhere.

    What nuac said ^^^^

There is cheap food in Westport as well, if you're willing to eat decomposed crap off a piece of ceramic. You get what you pay for. The restaurant owners in Westport make no more money than any restaurant owners elsewhere.

thanks for all the replies. Well, we went to Westport & stayed in hotel after all that to eat, in the Fishworks cafe/bar, beautiful fish & chips, really really nice. Well recommended. This guy started up on guitar later in the night...i don't know who he was but he was terrific, totally enjoyed the evening. Anyone know if he is a regular in the Atlantic Coast Carlton on Friday nights?
