There was a thread on this last week here

If you've been in your rental a while, it had been cleaned by your landlord and you've been using it since I'd say you should get it cleaned.

Otherwise the landlord shuld pay for it to be done.

I have been their about 2 months and the fire has been on about once or twice a week at most

If it wasn't cleaned by your landlord when you moved in then I'd definitely get onto them about getting someone in to clean it. See what they say.

Agreed, sould be fit for use when you moved in. Tell him you intend to continue using the fire in spite of the fact it is not clean, perhaps weighing the cost of a burnt down house against the cost of a sweep will motivate him.

The LL should have had it cleaned (in my opinion) before renting it out.

If you are using the fire, then you are causing the chimney to become dirty, and you should therefore be responsible for cleaning it.

Check your lease agreement to see if there is a clause regarding the matter.
