Anyone who regularly visits this forum should put their asl estimation in their profile along with their location. Would be very helpful for people when snow does start to fall.

Precip looks to have increased for Friday afternoon on the 12Z GFS

    But with -4 to -7 850 temps.....

    What does that mean?

potential for precipitation to fall as snow is marginal at best.

850hPAs are upper air temperatures. For precip to fall as snow at lower levels you would need to be looking at 850hPAs of -8c preferably.

    Pangea,

I agree with you. Casteknnock in West Dublin is only about 15 kilometres from the sea and the snow was heavy, sustained and on the ground for 15 days last winter, from 31 December 2009 to 14 January 2010 when thaw arrived. :D:D

I remember it well and it restored my faith in the statement "It does snow in Ireland"!! As a fellow D15'er, I was surrounded by the white stuff also for that whole period yet on most days if you commuted into town, hardly any in the city centre. Likewise during later snow falls that winter, while snow may have fallen in town, it was only when you got to the Phoenix Park and further inland that you saw it settled on the ground/whiteout conditions. Bring it on again, this winter!!

I wonder what the highest homes are in Ireland. I remember seeing some people who were the news last year at altitudes of over 1200feet. They were cut off for most of the cold spell though with 6th drifts!

(Not that I'll be giving any early reports of sneachta...)

12Z UKMO goes for a slightly different solution than the GFS and has -8 uppers over a lot of the country as early as Thursday morning :

I'm sure there are lots of homes on higher ground but regarding populated areas Roundwood in the Wicklow mts. is the highest village in Ireland, about 249m/780ft asl with a population of around 2000. We have our own Roundwoodian on the weather forum (can't think of his name, need more tea!)

GFS gets abit watery for me from 144hrs, lows from the south feeds up a little more marginal air.

Hopefully low will actually be in a better position with a better flow.
