Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That's enough messing. No more speculation on the thief's nationality or sexual proclivities. It's irrelevant and unhelpful.

It's great you got a picture of him. It's unfortunate that the resolution and quality is a bit low. When you zoom in on the face, there is just enough there to recognize the man though.

I cropped the man out of your original pic and tried unsuccessfully to sharpen it. Photoshop might have a better upscaler with a better interpolation method than I have with gimp. So hopefully someone can work their CSI magic.

It's not often enough that buggers like him get caught but I'd say theres a really good chance here. Hope he gets bloody knicked!!

Uhm, that's AJ Soprano. Good luck getting it back! :D

I had a go with Photoshop. Not much extra detail at all, but that jacket is distinctive and so is his face. Hopefully someone may recognise him.

Here's my effort... I think he has some design or logo on the right side of his cap, might be just a camera artefact though.

May I suggest asking somebody in the photo forum to perhaps assist with a photoshop job to clear it up.

I do a bit of photo work, this is the best I can do..

    scumbag_1.jpg

Have you thought about making a youtube video as well, it might go viral if you could send it on to enough people....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,317 ✭✭✭✭Raam

Thanks for the attempts to clean up the photo.
I was chatting with one of the photography forum mods last night and they are happy for me to request help from that forum in order to improve the picture.

However, he thinks the picture simply does not have enough resolution or data to make any better.

Possibly we have it as clear as we are ever going to get it.

Our preference is to get the bike back. That's our main aim, so please please keep your eyes peeled for a small black Bianchi road bike with the following features...

    Silver rear mudguard
    Pink and black tyres
Ripped saddle which says Selle San Marco
    Dent in the down tube
    Shimano 105 shifters

Failing that, I hope that this thread can at least promote a bit more awareness of how thieves are operating and maybe prevent a few bikes from being stolen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

I'll be keeping an eye out, but from having 4 bikes robbed in the last few years I know how unlikely it is to ever be seen again frown.gif The Gards even told me that some stolen bikes are being shipped off to other countries.

Hope you find it, and this moron is caught. If only for clearly thinking 'If i wear a hi-viz jacket, everyone will think I'm a real cyclist.'

The pink tyres for me are really a unique feature here, I'd imagine the thief or if someone bought the bike from him would probably have changed them straight away as they are very recognisable. I'll be keeping a sharp eye out for any bianchi either way.

This may have been asked before but if a sighting is made, what's the best plan of action. If the witness is on their bike they can follow the thief hopefully to his home. Call the gardai at this point and wait for backup? Might be best to contact the garda station you reported it to initially maybe?

I can't offer any guidance on what anyone should do when they see the bike or a person on the bike, that is up to them. I wouldn't make any request that anyone does anything other than advise me afterwards when and where the bike was seen so that I can try find it myself.

Have you thought about sending it in to CrimeCall? I think they were only on last week, but there'll be another one in about a month..

I'll do up a youtube video if you want.. would love to see this lad caught.. <snip>

There is no facebook page, only some pictures which I have shared out from my own. They are the same as those attached on the first post. If I get time later, I might create a page.

While I appreciate the sentiment, please don't suggest any violence against the thief. They just want to get their bike back and don't want to be the cause of someone getting a kicking, no matter what they've done.

I don't think we should go down the route of abusing Funkyzeits eyebrows for a bike he may or may not have legitimately bought

That was my point. Sometimes I think that those who are appointed mod status can loose a little perspective. If I were to steal a cream egg I could get some jail time, for example.

I'm sending the heavies up to Funkyzeit for a little fun as I type this.

So the cheeky fu€ker casualy puts on a visibility jacket before nicking the bike & cycling off?

Hopefully with a pic of his face you'll catch the €unt & get the bike back!

A high vis jacket is the best thing to wear,
when your up to no good in fairness!

SPOTTED HIM!!!!! Saw our man yesterday walking from leonard's corner towards town along the south circular road at 12.55pm. 100% certain it was him (verified by my girlfriend who has been following the thread . I recognised his face instantly, even before i noticed that he was still wearing the same coat and hat as in the picture. He was carrying a newspaper which I'm guessing he probably bought (or stole) on Leonard's corner. Although not guaranteed, their is A VERY GOOD chance that he lives or works in the area. Unfortunately, I was very late to a wedding and driving the opposite direction and thus unable to fulfill a life long dream of following a criminal and solving a crime!!

Several well-known junctions in Dublin city still carry the name of the pub or business which used to occupy the corner.

While this practice is by no means unique to Dublin, the pace of recent development there has meant that the original source of the name is more likely to have disappeared.

    Examples include:

Leonard's Corner: at the junction of South Circular Road and Clanbrassil Street.

I hadn't a clue where. Had to google it.

Ok, enough is enough. This is becoming a paranoid witchhunt of some foreign bloke who is going to college in <snip>.

    (1) There is not one shred of evident that this bloke is <snip> or anywhere else for that matter. He is a scumbag thief - his nationality has **** all to do with theivery. Theives come from everywhere.

    (2) Likewise there is not a shred of evidence that this bloke goes to <snip> for that matter. This is bull****, pure bull****.

Either you folk are taking the piss or you will at very worst precipitate some foreign looking bloke getting an undeserve hiding.

    The mods should seriously get this under control - it looks enormously foolish.;

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

I take your point ROK, however I also think you are over reacting. A certain amount of deduction is necessary to solve any crime right? :) Surely if someone is trying to locate their bike it's worth showing a picture to a security guard or a shopkeeper in the area. I agree that the nationality of the thief is irrelevant (I simply mentioned it because some people thought the person in question might be a foreign national) but trying to imply it's turning into a racist with hunt is a stretch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

I'm with ROK, the <snip> comment is def out or order and going down the 'foreigner' route isn't healthy.
I cant see the relevance of nationality re catching they guy, I know a foreigner, should I ask him if he stole it?
Perhaps we should start checking peoples papers while they walk down the street, of course if we insisted they need a permit to buy a bike it would be very easy to catch them......
