Wordpress 3.0.1 - Getting rid of custom home page

    I installed wordpress for the first time (v3.0.1), and have had a play around with it. Seems ok, but one thing that is really annoying me is that i cannot get rid of the custom home page that is present when it gets set up. If i could even make it a static page so that no comments etc are allowed, that would be fine. Really doing my nut in!
    Anyone know how to do something with this home page.
