New coffee shop opened on the corner of Denmark Street leading up to Cruises Street opposite Papa's. Story Cafe, it's run by a guy named Rene who managed Fitto on Catherine Street. He's a lovely guy, very friendly. Place looked well, called in his morning for coffee and to wish him well. Another unit that has failed to take off, and the coffee market in Limerick is tough if not past saturation already, bit i wish him well.

    This him?

Didn't know that. Still think its an odd offering in a petrol station...but there you go.

I'd say it's more you do with it being a big residential area. Fish and chip shops have always done well up there. No reason a burrito place wouldn't either.

Thankfully not everyone thought Nancy's was the only option for a night out even before these places opened.

Care to enlighten us? Nancys was pretty much the only over 23 option post midnight til "these places" opened

I was in there yesterday. Outside looks pretty much finished with signage up. Inside they were tiling, finishing electrics and such. I'd say by Easter it will be open or almost anyway.

On a side note, you love to knock limerick a lot, is it good enough for a visit now or something?

Let me see, just off the top of my head:

    Cobblestone Joe's,
    Gerry or Phil Flannery's,
    The Locke Bar,
    Costello's.

I socialised frequently in the town at weekends and very little of that was spent in the default Nancy's thankfully.

    Hi

Your correct about poster Goochy. I saw earlier he was on the Waterford City forum making his usual derogatory comments about Limerick as if there are no other places in Ireland with eyesores.

I love limerick ru getting me mixed up with someone else ??
I am a realist though so maybe that's the mix up. ? I usually visit a couple of times a year and love the strand hotel. However I do knock limerick for its many eyesores - I don't believe in going around with rose tinted glasses on - there's alot of eyesores . I am a Dub originally and I can assure you I am very critical of where I came from but no longer live.

Your post can be clearly seen no 19 in the Waterford city thread 300 million investment in Waterford. I doubt there are2 goochy posters on boards I only replied to you now as you appear to doubt my word . I rarely mix up things .

Went to the Cantina in the Thomondgate Topaz. Had the Chicken Burrito and the young lad had the pulled Pork. Both €6 meal deal with a drink. Tasty enough and plenty of options. Will be going again.

No, I'm not mixing you up with anybody else. I'll leave this gem here will I?

I see the pub at punches has signs up to say it is opening on the 24th. From the little I can see in the windows it looks like a top notch spot with no expense spared.

Don't click into the Limerick forum and slate Limerick then. Realist? So am I and I have a lot to say about Cork and Dublin too but I have the sense to keep my mouth shut, especially in these forums.

Ya I'm looking forward to it as well. I'm getting a bit tired of fennesseys and Punches is a whole 2 minutes shorter of a walk home!

Did anybody tip into the new punches yet? I didn't get up yet but my neighbours were in and said it was very pokey and there were way too many bright lights on. All high tables and devoid of much atmosphere.

I agree 100% with your neighbour's assessment. Popped in there Friday evening on my way up to Fennessey's to watch the Ireland game and we kept on walking. Very small bar although i did hear later that you can go out into "The Courtyard" which would have been nice for some outdoor pints over the last couple of days.

Also went to Pharmacia on Friday night, decent spot altough as a group we agreed the cocktails werent that great. Open late, good music on in the background and a nice relaxed feel to the place so i'll definitely go back.

    +1. Nice pint though.

Guinness?? The bar was packed when we looked in so we didnt even bother staying for one.

I also heard over the weekend that GBB's attempt at refurbishing O'Donnell's is still on the cards.

Agreed. It's a fairly dead street because of the narrow footpaths and two lanes of traffic. Any business is going to struggle there.

There's a decent case to be made for removing one of the lanes of traffic and putting in wide footpaths on both sides. It would bring the street alive again.

The section from Thomas Street to Roches Street is absolutely dire as well. It wouldn't look out of place in Aleppo.

Unfortunately that ship has sailed for the time being. I made a submission to the Parnell/Wickham Street improvement plan suggesting that they remove a traffic lane and widen the pathetically narrow footpaths. The councils response was that they needed to maintain the 2 lanes for capacity reasons.

It's a massive wasted opportunity. We'll get new surfaces but there will be no increase in the pavement width along Wickham Street and it’ll remain a hostile environment for pedestrians! If we’re serious about regenerating the city centre we have to make better decisions! Is badly needed investment going to be attracted to Wickham Street if it remains choked with traffic?!
