“Troy Studios is not Ardmore but it is owned by the same people. It is in essence the same thing and they have the same ambition.”

is it me or does it sound fishy? couple weeks ago the same people denied the very same plan

The didn't deny the plan. They denied that an agreement had been reached at that point, but confirmed that they were in negotiations.

    Agreed.

These aren't high end specialised executive roles (at least initially) but Limerick is starting from a very low base so comparisons to the IFSC and other financial/tech hubs is a little unfair at this stage.

Having globally recognised brands like Uber and Starbucks opening in the city is a massive boost - hopefully the start of a rising tide that will give everyone a lift

Yes, I assumed there were more techie roles considering it was a web type company but even though they may be call centre type jobs, there are 1000s of job seekers in the mid west region with various skill sets so many will be happy for this type of role and a pay packet 2-3 times what the dole pays along with the dignity and sense of purpose that having a job brings.

I recall when O2 first started in Plassey as Esat Digifone, it was purely call centre but has evolved into a Centre of Excellence for multiple business requirements creating many more higher calibre type jobs in recent years. No reason why Uber shouldn't similarly evolve.

Agreed, Job Benefits and Job Allowance is pittance compared to what you might make with a job with Uber or any other company to opens its war chest to Limerick.

Exactly...if the Call Centre/Client Servicing/Helpdesk side of things grows and evolves this will automatically create other ancillary roles/functions (eg. Training, HR, Testing, Analytics etc).

Also, the presence of an Uber office in Limerick would not necessarily lead to an increase of Uber taxis in the City. I'm open to correction but I would doubt if there's any link (other than increased awareness of Uber) between the two

Is something happening with the former Story Café in Denmark St? Saw a couple of chaps in hi-vis vests sitting in there earlier.

The old SISK and Hibernian Insurance building next the Henry St. Garda Station is after getting a lick of paint, hopefully, someone is moving in there. A few fine building lying waste there at that spot.

Amen to that. I'm back on Jobseekers after almost a year of employment (where I was on jobseekers more than a year for beforehand) and I'm depressed as can be right now. I've done training courses, etc but don't even get so much as an interview these days. I'm desperately hoping that this Uber announcement will mean some low-tier jobs so I and so many like me can have a chance at earning a semi-decent living. Minimum wage is still countless times better than being on the Dole. And as you said, the sense of purpose with having a job brings is beyond measure.

For me, the most significant thing about the Uber plan is the effect it could have on the city centre. 300 jobs in the suburbs is great, but 300 jobs in the city centre could lead to (true) regeneration of it.

Hence the need for more high quality office space to be developed in the city centre.

That's why the council bought the hanging gardens complex. They plan to have construction restarted by the start of 2016.

And accommodation too. We're severely lacking in decent accommodation in the city centre.

Coqbull restaurnat in Cork have posted pictures on their facebook and twitter of a fit out of their new restaurant in Limerick - any idea where? Looks like a building that hasn't been used in a long time

Doesn't look like Aubars, does it? I'll cycle past it in a while and check.

Trivia question: why was Aubars called Aubars?

I wonder if it's the old Munster Rugby Store on O'Connell St.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭zulutango

Just checked there and it looks like it could be Aubars alright. There's a big skip full of rubble outside.
