Hopefully the 1.4 update will be out within the week it includes:
" It will include the wolves, the ability to change your spawn point, and a rather ambitious statistics tracking and achievement system. Once that update is out, we’ll spend some time figuring out exactly what to do with the modding, which should result in a nice modding API." Can't effing wait!

IMO the game needs more than that:
- A revamped network code for lag reduction and better overall performance.
- Better rendering methods. The new render methods can be painful on some PCs.
- Easier integration of mods

Just fyi, whatever Notch is planning to implement in 1.4 is already available as mods/plugins to 1.3.

Umm I can't access minecraft (singleplayer or multiplayer) so I believe that it is updating. Well that and the updating minecraft screen I get when I try to log on..
