Age for College

Hey Guys was just wondering is there a specific age you have to be to do Medicine in college?

To attend NUI you must be seventeen by the 15th of January after entry.

You can apply to be let in at an earlier age, my fiance was a few days short.

I was 19 starting college (I've always been weirdly old), a good chunk of my year were 17 through first year.

Thank god im just worried about doing course like medicine and not being allowed because of my age :P:(

from the ucc website:MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENTS

For 2011 entry, CAO applicants for full-time degrees must normally have reached 17 years of age by 15th January, 2012. Where a candidate below that age seeks to enter UCC, special application must be made in writing to the President of the University, and should preferably be accompanied by a letter of support from the School Principal.

so you should be ok for ucc anyway and most other colleges are probably the same:)

Don't worry about the age, just have a word with them and you should be fine

edit: I think some council grant places have age requirements as well though

I strongly advise against going to college when you're 17. You won't be able to go out into town and get in anywhere, and the first few weeks of first year are when you make good friends with people. You'd honestly be better off taking a year out or something. Seriously, being 17 in college sucks hard, ignore the people telling you you'll be cool at 21 with a degree or whatever, one year barely makes a difference then but when you're 17 it makes ALL the difference.

No it doesn't

It is not the end of the world not being able to drink legally for the year :rolleyes:
She is going to do medicine, not a four year course in nightclubs & drinking.
There is nothing wrong with going early if you want to.

It's not about drinking, it's about being able to get into places at night.

And in my college Medicine have had the most class parties so far of all the first year classes...

Anyway there are plenty of houseparties and ways to get "into places"

Being in uni young does not "suck hard". You can make friends without getting drunk or into pubs.

Med students won't have time to go out anyway. I'd rather graduate a year earlier than spend first year eroding my liver (And then studying alcohol poisoning )

Besides, drinking =/= socialising

yeah im not much of a drinker anyways i think i can live a year without getting into clubs and so on....

While we were in college my fiance rarely went out too much, once a month or so. Anyway, med heads are renowned for their houseparties, worry not. Best of luck!

Most people are 17 doing the LC/going to college. I don't think it's ever stopped anyone getting in anywhere if that's what they're into. There are certain pubs and clubs in every student town in the country that cater to students. There are plenty of teenagers able to get served in pubs up and down the country every weekend and they're only 15 or 16. Getting into pubs is not a huge problem for college student if that's what they're into.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that they're cool finishing their degree at 21. It's nothing out of the ordinary. I was 21 finishing my degree like half of my class.

Med students not having time is bollocks, they will find time.

In UCD especially, class parties tend to involve the Student bar then a club. And class parties are the only time your class tend to get together as a whole group. Cliques form very quickly, so getting left out at the start would be a bit shít, especially if you end up in a course with premed.....

I went to college at 17. It was fine. Don't heed them. You make friends through societies and clubs, not in the pub.

My brother will be qualified as a doctor at 21...the five year course and starting school very young means he's likely to be one of the youngest to qualify. Nobody pays any heed of this though and he certainly does not act his age thankfully. Age is but a number!

In my class, Med in TCD, there's only 1 or 2 under 18. So far every night out has been to a night club which would exclude the younger ones. But as Fad says, societies are the way to go.

I completely agree! Its not really about drinking in my opinion just in terms of your own confidence it'd be better to be a bit older. Most people will be 18 or older and you might feel a bit out of your depth.

I don't even drink except at big things such as debs etc...so I'm not some alco desperate for dutch gold

Its not about drinking, being under 18 puts you at a disadvantage for a lot of things. Events during freshers week like even gigs in pubs or in the college bar were for over 18s only. Same during rag week. Even our trip abroad gets complicated with under 18s for hostels.

Medicine wise, premeds go out a lot. There were a few people in our class under 18 that couldn't go to town with us after house parties, and they did miss out a bit, but medicine in general get very clique-ey very quickly from being in the same class alone so you wouldn't miss out too much in the camaraderie in the class.
