Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

PC won't boot - getting a flashing amber light

Hi. I have a Dell Dimension 5150 and it suddenly stopped working. I removed the plug and when I plug it in the only thing that happens is that the power button on the front flashes amber. I've gone through the Dell website for this PC but it's not very helpful :(

I opened the case and can see a green LED beside the RAM. Is there anything I can check?

    Thanks

Just checked here and found that a flashing amber light means either a power supply or motherboard failure :(

Strange that there is a light on the motherboard beside the RAM though. Any idea how to find out which is the problem?

Did you check the diagnostic lights on the back of the computer?.

Did you check the diagnostic lights on the back of the computer?.

I just stumbled across the info for them (they are REALLY hard to see). No's. 2 & 3 are flashing and the site says that if these lights are on it could be a floppy\hard drive failure. Not much help - with everything disconnected it still doesn't boot...

Open up the case, without the power cable in of course. Take the battery out of the motherboard. Then hold down the power button for 40 seconds. That will drain the last bit of power from the board. Pop the battery back in. Plug back in etc. Power it up. It will turn on. You will have to set the date and time again in the bios. The computer will stay on unless you shut down. Then you will have to do the whole reset again. If you put it to sleep or restart it will be ok. This is a very common power fault in the dimension. A new PSU wont even fix it.
