Reading Electricity Meters

    I live in an apartment and my electricity meters are at the back of the building, the management company guy only has the key. I want to be able to read my own meter and ring in my readings to Bord Gais.

    He implied to me that he wasn't prepared to come around (every 2 months or so to read my meter), I believe I have the right to take my own readings :(

    What do you think I should/can do?

    What sort of key is used? Is it not a standard meter box key that you can pick up in any hardware shop?

    It is like that but the boxes are held in a sort of room and there is an outside lock to the door so I can't get in at it :(

    Ask him nicely for a key and if he refuses ring him every day saying you want access to check it :D

    He said to me yesterday, he was not prepared to give this key to anyone but it annoys me and I told him bluntly, I had a big bill from BG and I will not have that again, I want to be able to have access to that room when I want to take my readings.

    Do you own the apartment? You really should be allowed access to the room, I've heard of people in a similar situation though :(

    I'd be persistent with the guy.

    Also check your bord gais bills, are they estimated or an actual read?

    I see you are with BG but ESB still own the meters iirc.

    You are realistically not going to be able to get daily access to this meter. I am not saying you not should be able to read it, but it is just not practical. Nor is it practical for the management company to read the meter very regularly.

    You could get a sub-meter installed, something like this:

    If you have storage heating, you might need two of these, one for the storage heating, the other for the regular electricity.

    These would need to be fitted by an electrician and you would need to consult with the electrician for his suggestion on the best meter to install.
