Why have RTE employed a 15 second time delay on the bailout announcement?

I watched this all on BBC News anyway. It only got interesting (worthwhile) when Browne's questions began to go in. There was something so satisfying knowing that the international media were all covering this hard-hitting line of questioning.

Vincent Browne was indeed cutoff by RTE.

Meh listened to the interview there. More of a rant than a grilling. Of little importance really. Little info there worth hearing other than Vincent Browne just getting angry. He has his own show as a platform, I don't see why RTE need to give him even more. I'd say it has less to do with censorship and more to do with Vincent Browne not being well liked by RTE.


I'd also dispute the RTE bias argument given Brian Dobson's grilling of Mary Hanafin tonight on The Week in Politics (first half is worth watching on RTE player, paid little attention to the second half) and how much time was given to both Opposition members to grill her at length, taunt her and so on.

There is no doubt in my mind that it was cut because Browne began to question the Taoiseach. The sudden link back to the studio when his voice was heard made this all too obvious.

Regardless of the history between RTÉ and Browne or anyone elses opinion of him or his method of asking questions, it is shameful that our national broadcaster did not cover a press conference of such importance in full.

They had the rest of the evening to give us the expert opinion of the panelists in the studio.

It wasn't just 2 foreign networks who carried it. It was on Bloomberg, France 24, Al Jazeera, RT TV (Russian), CNN, Indian TV and several more.

I only suspect that the 15 seconds is for RTE who need time to Bleeps out alot of swear words or enough time to decide to cut transmissions to something else especially with the amount of anger people have for politicians especially the government.

I sure China or North Korea have shown this to their populations to show them how bad in sh*te the west are in, because of capitalist corruption at it core. Those countries would have jail these people who commit those acts that destroy the economy. We just reward these people with a pay off and a lack of accountability.
It could be used as scare tactics to it population, intended or not.
China are still going strong while the North Koreans would not know any better.

Time delays for live broadcasts became standard on a lot of news networks in the US after the wardrobe malfunction for the Jackson wan a few years back, and it spilled over here I think. I didn't see the original RTE report, but the full thing seemed to be on the RTE website last night.

15 sec delay was brought in for all live broadcasts as I recall, after that "blowjob" defamation case.

Still, its disgraceful that they pulled away for anything during this broadcast.

It must certainly hasn't spilled over here as can be seen on live shows live The Frontline, the Late Late Show and Prime Time.

It could be seen live on BBC, Sky, etc,etc

A former director of programmes on RTE has stated on the Matt Cooper show that she would have offered her resignation if she had made the mistake that was made by cutting the Vincent Browne questoning of Brian Cowen last night.

The use of profanity delays are common in Ireland but is not common place to have a 15 second delay here.

Further its even more unusal for a state broadcaster to transmit news of extraordinary importance 15 seconds behind other broadcasters, they always want to be the first to get the news out

RTÉ ran comprehensive coverage of the events surrounding the Cabinet meeting of Sunday 21st November.The in-depth interview with the Minister for Finance on This Week on RTÉ Radio 1, providing confirmation that Ireland would be seeking a financial rescue package, set the afternoon news agenda. Detailed analysis of the story was provided on the Six One News which had an average audience of 636,000 and there was live coverage on RTÉ One of the Government press conference between 8.30 and 9.00pm. At 9.00pm we switched to an extended edition of the Nine O’Clock News and at 10.30pm there was an extended edition of The Week in Politics. Our online news service on rte.ie ran the full Government press conference which continued for just three minutes after we finished coverage on TV.
There has been a suggestion that we in some way censored Vincent Browne’s questioning of the Taoiseach for reasons of commercial rivalry with TV3. This is far from being the case. Our news special ran for half an hour and contained a number of questions from various journalists including our own, some international broadcasters and from TV3 both Ursula Halligan and Vincent Browne whose first four questions were broadcast before we returned briefly to studio for analysis and then went to the extended Nine O’Clock News. The News Special attracted an average audience of 364,000 compared to 35,000 for Sky News’ coverage of the same event.
RTÉ One, being a mixed channel and not a specialist News channel, has to serve audience needs other than News. That said, on a night of intense national drama, it was imperative that the Nine O’Clock news went to air on time for the huge audience (average 769,000) who switched to us to find out the latest developments. To mark the seriousness of the day’s events, The Week in Politics was brought forward to 10.30 pm, broadcast live and extended, and received an average audience figure of 359,000.
RTÉ News is satisfied that it covered yesterday’s events fully and appropriately.

Hello,

I am very concerned about how RTE handled Brian Cowen's Bailout Announcement this evening. First of all. there was an obvious 15 second delay compared to international channels such as the BBC, which is a known practice in certain live programs such as the Superbowl in the US to avoid the transmission of "wardrobe malfunctions". However, here in Ireland this looks as a very suspicious practice, and this suspicion is exacerbated by a sudden cut in the transmission in the middle of the questioning by the press - unlike foreign channels.

I am tending to believe that we facing an introduction of censorship in RTE. Can any assurance otherwise be provided? If so, how can tonight's events be explained?

And did the news cover the Vincent Browne questions? Because what they're admitting to is that due to their censorship, intentional or not, only 35,000 people saw this battering of the Taoiseach compared to what should have been 364,000 on RTE
