    Tuesday

    7.56 miles @ 9:20 Pace

Went to physio on Monday night who did some work on the affected area which definitly helped a bit but discomfort was still there. He said to try it out last night which I did and although it was uncomfortable the pain if anything eased off as I warmed up. Will see how it feels later on before deciding on another session today.

Either way should be fine to do the 10 mile on Saturday, just a case of how well I'll be able to run it

    Frank Duffy 10 Mile Race

    10.02 miles in 1:17:26
    Avg Pace 7:43

Wasn't sure what to expect with this race as I feel slightly behind where I was this time last year. A couple of good long runs though in recent weeks led me to believe my stamina had improved. Hoped to go under 78 minutes which would be a PB of around 30 seconds.

    Mile 1: 7:30
Didn't want to go out too fast. This was a quick mile anyway and managed to keep the pace in check.

    Mile 2: 7:38
Bit more effort on this mile with a bit of a rise across past the Zoo. Saw Digger looking disinterested and took a bit of abuse from Claralara telling me to run faster.

    Mile 3: 7:55
Gradual rise up the North Road. Legs started giving out a bit and a few doubts started creeping in. Saw Chinguetti stewarding here and think I might have passed Aimman here as well.

    Mile 4: 7:40
Overcame my mini slump towards the end of the North Road and up around Castleknock gate. Saw a club mate about 50 metres ahead of me that would probably be ahead of me when we do intervals but I was happy now I had a target.

    Mile 5: 7:36
Down Chesterfield avenue and slowly reeled in fella from Club. Kept a few metres behind him trying to guage how I felt. Didn't want to go past him and then be passed out again by him later.

    Mile 6: 7:38
Passed my clubmate here. Realised my pace had slowed to his so picked it up again. Knew when I went past that unless I fell to pieces I probably wouldn't see him again.

    Mile 7: 8:01
Now on to the hard part of the course. Legs were hurting before Military hill. Didn't put pass on the watch for this portion just got up as best I could and as comfortable enough to be able to pick up the pace again. This seemed to work.

    Mile 8: 7:50
Definitly hurting at this point but relative to the undulations pace was not really slipping.

    Mile 9: 8:08
Worked out at the start of this mile I needed 2 8 minute miles or just under to go under 78 mins. This was a bitch of a mile long drag. Pace was down halfway through it but picked up in the latter stages as it flattened out somewhat.

    Mile 10: 7:21
So I now needed under 7:50ish to meet target. Although I was hurting I knew this was a flat mile is not slightly downhill and I was fairly confident. Gradually increased the pace the closer to the finish we got. Still felt like an age when I turned the corner onto Furze road. Gave it everything and happy to finish in 77:26

So about a minute PB from last yearI think. Happy to have a bit of confidence restored from a racing point of view.

    Tuesday

    10.23 miles

Details of this one a bit sketchy as garmin information is stuck somewhere in cyberland. Some from the club were meeting in Ardgillan Part to do hill intervals so I said I'd run there to meet them which was around 5.75 miles with some quality hills around 9:20 pace. Did 3x1K hill repeats in around 5:10ish from what I remember. These were very tough especially the last 300m which was straight uphill. Rest of the distance was made up of a warmdown which also included some serious hills which are impossible to avoid here.

Expected to be wrecked yesterday but legs felt better than before.

I have to drive a 1/2 hour to meet someone, and I have a golf final this afternoon so I would prefer to have a few drinks after it and not have to get up (especially as its my birthday tomorrow).

So won the golf final on Friday evening which led to some celebrations. LSR postponed but out before 7am on Sunday morning. Took legs a while to waken up but felt fine throughout. Looped around to meet the start of the club session at 8:30 and went with then until I had to turn for home. Was under time pressure so above was all I could get in.

    Saturday - Dublin Half Marathon

    13.13 miles in 1:43:53 Avg Pace 7:55

So the prelude to this was I came home from work on Friday lunchtime with flu like symptoms. Pains in legs and temperature. Slept for the afternoon and felt bit better. Reckoned I would try and run anyway.

Sat morning came and legs still had strange pains. Ah well was going to give it a go and see what happened sure I could make an LSR out of it at worst. Quick chat with Chinguetti, Digger & Claralara who was discussing her autograph strategy and I took my place between 1:40 & 1:50 pacers. Race went something like this:

    Mile 1 - 7:46

Slow and crowded start down Kyber. Hard to make any gains here. Pace ok but lost time to bank a bit.

    Mile 2 - 8:00

Spread out a bit with a bit of uphill stretch. Legs feeling shot already. Head telling me to ease up.

    Mile 3 - 7:52

Still on North road trying to switch off and dig in. Working too hard for pace.

    Mile 4 - 8:07

First drink and up towards top of north road. Nothing left in legs already it seemed.

    Mile 5 - 7:47

Picked up a bit here with mostly flat/downhill from what I remember.

    Mile 6 - 7:57

Got a shout from Mr Slow at start of this mile and into farmleigh. Popped a gel here and nearly got tripped from behind. Actually thought it would be better if I had been tripped so I could stop.

    Mile 7 - 7:47

Out onto tower road and nice bit of downhill followed by rise back into the park. Over halfway now.

    Mile 8 - 7:48

Onto chesterfield and past those bootcamp clowns. Was pretty much flat out here but pace not showing it.

    Mile 9 - 7:44

Down and onto the paths knowing now was last time to try and bank any time. Reckoned I was around 1:43:xx pace at this stage.

    Mile 10 - 7:29

Down and out of the park and back up Main road. Gradient slightly uphill and into the wind. Fastest mile of the race for me but feet starting to give out.

    Mile 11 - 8:21

Back into park and last water stop. Nasty uphill before military hill. People stopping all over the place. Got up hill and kept going as best I could. Both feet in pain but ony 2 miles to go.

    Mile 12 - 8:03

Picked up a bit up and over S bends etc. legs well and truly gone and balls of both feet burning badly.

    Mile 13 - 8:15

Upper glen road. Slowest part of race for most people in 10 miler and lots struggling here even though last mile. Felt like I was running on the spot with nothing left to give which was about right. Never happier to turn onto Furze Road.

    Finish - 7:16 pace

Felt like I was still plodding at the end but must have raised a bit of a spurt. Crossed the line wrecked and feeling sick and feet killing me.

Summary: was definitely not 100% yesterday. Avg pace was 12 secs per mile slower than 10 miler. Can handle that though as felt I dug in and didn't quit despite not going my way. Bigger worry us my feet AGAIN. Was wearing Saucony Omny for first time in race yesterday and had run for a lot longer in them last weekend without any problem. Need to get to bottom of that pretty soon.

P.S. apologies for length of report and general waffle but Downton Abbey is in the Telly here.

    Sunday

    6 miles in 57:54

    Avg Pace 9:39
Avg HR 207 (anyone see spikes like this with new battery?)

Out for dinner and few drinks last night. Brought the car with intention of picking it up this morning. No major aches after yesterday apart from feet. Nice recovery run and shared about a mile if it with a fella in the middle of an 18 mile LSR.

Well done on digging in and finishing P but you shouldn't race when feeling like that, there's nothing surer to prolong any illness. Mind yourself!

Out through Farmleigh and down Tower Road for maybe 1/2 mile and also out the bottom of Chesterfield and right up to gate at bottom of Kyber/Military.
