Well done on hitting the 1000 miles. Didn't see you on the day, but I was probably starting further back down the pack with jscmum.

    4.02 miles
    Avg Pace: 10:11

Recovery run this evening. No real niggles or doms from yesterday just a bit of tiredness. Run felt like a bit of a chore but I find that with all recovery runs.

    Monday

    15 miles
    Avg Pace: 9:11

Didn't make it out over the weekend as had a late night Friday night and family stuff on Sunday so headed out after work last night for 15 miles. Did first 8 on my own around 8:51 pace and then met a few from the club for the last 7 where the pace slowed a bit and the rain came. Bit of a niggle in the right quad and calves a bit tight after the run but apart from that enjoyed the run.

Another run in Germany. Nothing interesting about where I am this week regarding running unfortunately. The only bonus from being away has been a few nights un-interrupted sleep. Back home tonight and a couple of miles tomorrow and reckon that will be it till Monday.

Good man Pistol, great job and well done for toughing it out. You looked to be in a bit of pain passing me at 40k.

Great PB for you. Expect a sub 3 next year going by your progress.:D
Obviously chasing the little lad around the house is improving your stamina:D

Well done lad, you deserve it.

    26.3 miles in 3:46:10

    Avg Pace: 8:36

So my backround with the marathon consists of a 4:59 in Dublin 2010 having only really started running earlier that year and a 4:16 in Dublin last year following good training but having problems with my feet for the last 10 miles. I had a lot of doubts over whether I was able for the marathon and lots of doubts I suppose. Main challenge for this year was to just keep training away clocking up the miles training smarter having learned a lot from different peoples logs and to do the race with no time target but to prove to myself I could do the race PROPERLY. Taper had gone well and arrived at the start ready to go. Here's how the race unfolded for me.

    Miles 1-5 (8:41, 8:26, 8:21, 8:16, 8:18)

Started off towards the rear of wave 1 with the intention of running the first 5 miles around 8:30 pace and re-evaluate every 5 miles how I felt. First mile a bit slower with crowds but didn't weave at ll and saved my energy. This brought me up to the park and mile 4 & 5 I noticed the pace picked up so I tried to hold back a bit. Even into the wind on Chesterfield I tried to conserve energy but pace felt easy.

    Miles 6 - 10 (8:24, 8:15, 8:07, 8:21, 8:14)

Kept going at same effort knowing I would pick up time coming out of the park. Saw a club mate in front of me after about 7.5 miles that was hoping to run 3:45. Compared times and she had started about 45 seconds before me. Ran about a mile with her but pulled away from her crossing the river after coming out of the park. Got up the couple of hills grand with no major effort or suffering regarding pace. Again felt like I was holding a bit back and was thinking I would be giving back some of the banked time on the way to Crumlin.

    Miles 11 - 15 (8:03, 8:14, 8:20, 8:15, 8:17)

Memories from here last year were not good and seemed to remember it as a tough part of the course. Even up to Crumlin there was a pretty strong breeze and I felt like I was taking it handy enough. Went through halfway in just under 1:50 and calculated I was on 3:40 pace. Sh1t I thought to myself that is far too quick. Then I re-assured myself I was feeling fine and just to keep taking it mile by mile.

    Mile 16 - 20 (8:29, 8:18, 8:11, 8:21, 8:55)

Was counting down the miles at this stage. Probably felt like I was working for the first time coming up to bushy park but nothing major. Lovely run through Terenure, Dartry and Milltown. Knew there would be a couple of tough miles coming up but was prepared for the work required and didn't mind if the pace slipped slightly around Clonskeagh.

    Mile 21 - Finish (8:53, 9:04, 9:33, 9:56, 9:46, 9:28, 2:36)

Got up Roebuck Hill pretty ok and picked it up again coming down fosters avenue. Knew the worst was over me and was prepared to dig deep for the last 5 miles and see what I could get. Took my 5th and last gel on the N11 and headed for the UCD flyover. Was starting to hurt now but nothing worse than expected. Both groins felt tight and also quads. Coming down the UCD flyover then kaboon. Both quads cramped up just over the knee at the same time. Brought me to a stop for about 20 seconds to walk and ease it out again. Down Nutley lane I was finding it hard to get back up to my earlier pace without it bringing on cramping again. This was the story of the last few miles with short stops and loosening out the legs once or twice most miles. Got to the end in the finish and at that stage had pretty much nothing left regarding sprint finish. Checked my watch at 3:46:10 and was thrilled with a PB of just over 30 minutes on last year and having done a marathon properly for me. Well almost properly :)

Am not sure if the pace in anyway contributed to the cramping. I was well hydrated the day before and took a bottle of lucozade sport on the morning of the race. Took 3-4 good sips of water at every water station and an isogel at 5, 10, 15, 18 & 21. I do tend to sweat a lot in normal circumstances anyway so maybe I should have been taking on some electrolytes to replenish lost salt.

Anyway I guess that is something to work on for the next marathon. Thanks for reading the report and thanks to everyone for the shouts out around the course in particular those I saw (sunflower ro, Mr Slow & Chinguetti).
