I think for the most part the populace want an election

i can only imagine cowen wants to gain an extra seat or two by holding on after passing the budget til March

and therefore that or he got some deal with someone (SF?:D) that ensures the dudget will pass.

    or else he's completely deluded.

hmm, Rhen putting the pressure on now...

They will, they will depend on the casting vote of the Ceann Comhairle, according to Pat Rabbitte tonight.

That's with every FF deputy and Mary Harney voting with the Greens. Assuming FF lose the By-election in Donegal and the two independents voting against the budget it ends up 79-79 and the Ceann Comhairle casts for the government as he has to. If they lose any of their deputies as well as the independents they lose the vote.

chopra -cuts and privatisation. seems they havent changed that much.

and now no money without the budget as it stands.

the lot of em, FF FG and Lab IMF and EU better get into a room fairly sharpish

Hang on a second, there seems to be a lot of people under the impression that it will have to wait until 7th December for the budget vote to take place and we find out when biffo is getting sent packing.

My own prediction/hope is that Enda Kenny will call a vote on the matter at 10.30 tomorrow and Biffo will be forcibly removed there and then as Taoiseach. If that doesn't happen, then those people calling for him to begone are hipocrites.

What seems to be the consensus though is that somehow the govt will escape for 20 dyas or so without being voted out. How can this happen, by FG/Lab abstaining, because they agree the budget should pass?In which case, why would they call on him to go today?

Why are RTE continuously saying that Biffo gave a brilliant speech tonight. He didn't, he was his usual stuttering self. The bias of RTE has been sickening over the last few days. Time and time again they have shown FF bias

    according to twitter:

FG TD Charlie Flanagan will be moving for motion of no confidence in Brian Cowen & Gov tomorrow

Yup. the first of many, if he survives.

'a strong performance' which was true in that he was calm and assured. really it was 'under the circumstances' sort of thing.

Fintan O Toole talking a bit of sense here on the Frontline.

    I like his analogy:

"Deciding the budget, making all the decisions, and negotiating with the IMF, and then holding an election... is the equivalent of worrying about which brand of condoms to buy, after you find out you're pregnant"

yeah, pity he got into the barney with Bruton.

I thought Bruton was good as well.

wnder why Pat Kenny (finally in his element) isnt mentioning the ultimatum from rhen - ie no budget = no money.

Killeen completely useles, hasn't a clue what he's talking about, complete idiot. I'm basing this on several interviews.

The audience laughed at Eamonn Ryan when he mentioned the word honest. Then some lad went on a rant.

posted this in the TV, but it's relevant here

yeah, getting the impression the Greens know they fuucked up.

I do understand what they were trying to do - ie tell the public, chill, you'll have your say. - BUT we cant give it to you now, cos it'd de-stabilise the EU/IMF talks.

so em, we're gonna put through a budget with no real mandate, - for your own good - , and em, well, retire from politics...

    they really fuucked up.

it's 'all in' or nuthin in politics dear friends

there is no inside and outside. God love em. and it is a pity because they had some good people. and policies ah well.

course, once they drank from the FF chalice in 2007, I knew itwas all over.

What a way to lose one's political virginity. Ouch.

Newstalks breakfast home page are reporting that there will be significant developemnts in the morning regarding the Taoisech, all over politics.ie as well.
FG being urged to put forward vote of no confidence which a number off FF back benchers will support

Bruton was much improved since the last time I saw him debating on television.
I was impressed with how he spoke, his passion and his ideas.
While I don't think FG's reinventing govt program goes far enough, they have at least recognised that political reform is a must priority.

I like O'Toole - he is giving a voice and pushing the political reform agenda as much as he can and that needs to take headline space if this country is ever going to rid itsel;f of the First Republic.

Killeen looked suitably chastened but still managed to throw a grubby accusation at o'Toole about Fitzpatrick then slithered away from the slur he threw at o'Toole - typical FF gombeen.

Ryan - I have nothing to say - he and his like are immaterial now.

I hope the rumours are true on Newstalks site - that we will have a no confidence motion and that Cowen & FF & GP will be ignominously thrown out from Govt tomorrow, defeated by some of their own kind desperate for their political lives.
A proper end for a criminal government.

In reaction to the 7pm Cowen "statement", what bothered me is the way RTE's David Davin Power repeatedly referred to Cowen's speech as "a strong performance".

I just found it odd. BBC, SKY etc. gave coverage which touched on the public lack of confidence in Cowen, SKY at one stage referring to the government's situation as "calamitous", and gave an impression of disbelief at this Prime minister hopelessly clinging on to power.

Yet this RTE guy insisted on putting a positive spin on it (on both post-speech and 9 o'clock news), giving the impression that Brian did a good ol' speech and we should all support him.

FFS did anyone just hear Mary O'Rourke on 98FM? ... When the presenter stated FF had ruined the country she denied it and wanted to know what progamme they had heard this on.
I think there isn't much confidence in the state broadcaster at the moment, perhaps if the cuts start hitting them we might see a more neutral viewpoint.
