I remember when the Lair had to be shut because of the demands it was putting on the system. Is there any chance a mega image thread could cause similar problems?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

I'm heading over to the Consipracy Theories forum to hear their take on all this...

    Nope.

    It's not a capacity issue.

It's a very, very specific network bug. Possibly a bug in the driver for one of the network cards for the loadbalancers. Possibly a misconfiguration in some arcane FreeBSD TCP/IP tuning variable. Possibly a bad interaction with some kit in Digiweb's data centre (unlikely that it's that though).

I blame the snowflakes, Connor and Ross should be given a Kit-Kat imo!

Just saying though, I have time to rearrange all my Diet Coke cans in the fridge, go upstairs and flatten the folds out of the duvet, leave fresh water out for the cats and when I get back to my computer I'm still waiting for my reply to a post to send.

OKAY..that was just once, but the timeline above is still the same.

    It's still very slow.:(

I'm experiencing issues in transmission also...fix it.

To the previous two posters, it's slow around 4:30 (when both of you posted) because that's roughly when we're transferring our nightly backup off-site.

I had tried to throttle the amount of bandwidth used by that before, but the throttling caused other problems.

    Also, comments like this:

Haven't had an issue in a few days..

Poor form on the 'fix it' comment, you would swear that you were paying their wages or loosing money over it

According to our monitoring, the problem hasn't happened since Thursday night.

Here's a graph from one of our external monitoring services:

    attachment.php?attachmentid=138119&stc=1&d=1291470179

The times shown are the average time taken to fetch the front page. The lumps in the graph are, from left to right: Sunday 4pm-midnight, Monday 7pm-2am, Tuesday 4pm-midnight, Wednesday 4pm-midnight and Thursday 7pm-midnight.

Dunno if it's related Conor but yesterday a lot of times when I posted, the post didn't show up after hitting submit.

Refreshing the page caused it to show.

That's unrelated, and it's a known issue which will be mostly sorted in the next few weeks and completely sorted at some stage in the future.
