I'm toying with the idea of making my own coffee table but something a little different - I'm looking for a glass top for it but need a rectangular shape cut out in the middle of it.

What type of glass would I need to safely top the coffee table and where could I get it - would any window fitters be able to supply me with it and cut out the section from the middle of it or would I have to go elsewhere?

I've had glass cut to size / shape on a couple of occassions for furniture I've made. The two places i've dealt with are in Dublin so might not be practical for you but most glass shops should be able to advise you.

You would probably need toughened glass. I have used http://oreillyglass.ie/ for glass at work. They should be able to cut out the section for you and toughen it.
Might be worth giving a call.

    Hope this helps.

Edit: Sorry just noticed your location and they are in Drogheda. Might be too far for you
