Would you normally get many rabbits from the hawk when you go out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 535 ✭✭✭jellybaby21

Its like everything else, some days are better than others. If you get a good day with plenty of rabbits bolting clean then the birds could get 2 or 3 each. The best day I have had with my bird was 4 rabbits and a cock pheasant.I have had plenty of days where she has had 3 rabbits. But then some days we blant when the rabbits don't play ball and wont break clean. Its all in a days hawking.

Well your more than welcome to come out to my land after pheasant season though. Local GC wouldn't be happy with being out with bop. They told me already.

Can't blame them is true but I had lad tellin me he'd shoot my bird if it goes near his pheasant. That was last year. They didn't release any this year.

Fascinating stuff, is there any preference over male/female birds?

Males are more suited on birds as they're smaller and faster but will take rabbits too. Females will take birds aswell but wouldn't be as successfull but take rabbits handier with having bigger feet. Also hares can be taken by experienced birds

Presuming that they can't be caught up in the wild how much does a Harris Hawk cost.

Prices vary but around 350-400 for a male and 400-500 for a female.
