Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Expect a lot of Brazilian born Qatar lads by the time the tournament comes along.

TBF, they have hosted some biggish sporting events.

Very interesting on SSN they said that Sepp Blatter's biggest challenge to another term is one Mohammed Bin Hammam, President of the Asian Football Confederation, who was a major player in Qatar's bid. Just found this too from this past August:

Sounds like a lot of politics were at work here.

I mentioned that above, didn't realise he'd stepped aside. If I had I'd've basked my house on Qatar getting it.

Brazil won't be ready for 2014. They promised not to use taxpayers money, now they are. Russia is also potentially high risk, but fairly understandable as they have never hosted the World Cup. But I think we should look at why the WC has gone to potentially 4 "high-risk" countries in each of the last 4 World Cup years. The German World Cup was far more successful than South Africa.

Ah, check your history mate, 1950 might be a clue

    Brazil hosted it in 1950..

South Africa, Brazil, Russia and Qatar!

Could they BE any further away from us!!

Yeah because FIFA are committed to making sure the World Cup is easily accessible to fans of a country that haven't qualified for the last 2 World Cups.

I was in Vegas this July and if Qatar will be like that for the WC then it will be hell on earth. Indoor all air conditioned stadiums no thanks.

This will be like shouting fish in a barrel for Al Qaeda also and if the US qualifies then I can expect a few attempts at carnage. Flight time to Doha is 6hrs 40m from Heathrow 7hrs 20 from Dublin so is similar to New York in terms of Journey time. Qatar is three hours ahead so will be ok for TV Audiences.

Russia had merit and Putin took the Moral high ground and stayed away so I think the Russians won it and deserved it however only England could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like that.

Flight time from Dublin to Moscow is about 4hours and 5hours to Yekaterinburg which is the furthest away city where games will be held. Moscow is 3 hours ahead and Yekaterinburg is 5 hours away so will not be so out of Sync with TV audiences like the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Games.

Both Russia and Qatar will be absolute rip-offs and Russia is one of the most expensive countries there is with a huge gulf between the Oligarcy and peasent working class there. Qatar is just Oil and everything is artificial in the desert.

Brazil seems the best bet for a bit of value, even though it is a hell of a long flight.

Pretty pleased Russia got it to be honest. If I choose, I can probably be working there during that year, with a free summer to blow all my money going to games.

Qatar though, I don't understand why.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,798 ✭✭✭karma_

    Well, that was interesting.

Firstly Russia, I can't say I'm too disappointed, sure it would have been great to go to England to catch a few matches for handiness sake but I think it's not half a bad a choice as a lot of people are making out. They have the infrastructure and the promises they made with their bid definitely makes it attractive, and as for travel it should be handy enough got too, even if it means getting a train.

Qatar is a weirder choice in fairness, not sure how I feel about it now that it's official, it could either be a fantastic WC to attend or be a complete disaster. It's such a small place it's almost like having it in a larger version of Monaco.

For those watching on TV, match times should be ideal for both.

slightly OT, but Prince William is looking more like Charles than Diana as he gets older.

he may even be trying to perfect the comb-over up top.

Talking about the "injustice" of it in the English media. Almost makes me happy they didn't get it. Almost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,358 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

but it is more than likely unjust.

there is no way all 3 bids were better than England, yet they got 4 votes.

and Qatar getting 2022 shows this has nothing to do with the quality of the bid.

Time to set up an alternative organisation to FIFA. They are not fit to run football. Qatar is a farce but i cant see international football being relevant then if it even exists.
