I think so. I've smoked more than every now and again for the last 2 years and even still I could drop them without any problems whatsoever and have done so for months at a time since then..

I've never been addicted to anything though, really. Some people just don't have addictive personalities? I really don't know.

Most people's reason for smoking is describing the physical affects of addiction to smoking. That's just a bi-product of what's going on deep within your noodle. It's like being in love my hole. Sad man to compare it to love.

    • Cigarettes are very expensive.
So are quite a lot of things I enjoy. If I couldn't afford going to music gigs, I wouldn't but I can and I enjoy them so I do. Same with smoking. If I couldn't afford it I wouldn't do it, but I can so I do.
[*]Smoking causes cancer and can kill you.
This is true. Surfing and rally driving could also kill me. If I was to avoid doing anything that could kill me I would be very very bored. I'm aware of the risks of the things I do, some I am willing to except.
[*]Cigarettes taste horrible and make your breath stink, not attractive.
I quite enjoy the taste of nice tobacco. I did even when I haven't smoked. Taste is subjective. I find the taste of Coca-cola disgusting for instance. It doesn't seem to negatively effect me in the attractiveness stakes. I do ok for myself. But again it's subjective, I find 'curvy' girls very unattractive for instance, others love them.
[*]Cigarettes leave your fingers and teeth a yellow colour, again not attractive.
My teeth or fingers are not yellow and I smoke everyday. The way I hold the smoke means the smoke doesn't run along my fingers and my toothpaste seems to do a perfect job of keeping my teeth pearly white.
[*]Smoke can stink up your clothes, lynx does not cover it up.
It can, but I only smoke outside, so it doesn't.
[*]Cigarettes give you a digusting horse voice, it's what I'd imagine a cabbage to sound like if it could talk.
I find that gravelly voice quite sexy on girls. Presumably some girls have no problem with it on guys. Back to taste being subjective.
[*]You have to go out into the cold or rain if your smoking on a night out, unless the beer garden is heated, even then its still cold.
I have no problem with the cold. It rarely gets that cold in Ireland. Try living in Northern Canada for a while, you'll know all about cold. But on most nights out I find it's the non-smokers that end up outside with all the smokers. Let's be honest, they know where the fun crowd are gonna be hanging out.
[*]Smokers can't enjoy a bus/train/plane journey without getting all twitchy over their next cigarette.
I can, with no problems whatsoever. For people that can't there are nicorrette style products.

[*]Smokers can't enjoy a meal in a restaurant without heading outside for a quick cigarette.
I can, with no problems whatsoever. But I also really really enjoy having a smoke after a nice meal in a restaurant, I find it adds to the experience as a whole and really missed it in times when I didn't smoke. I find it breaks up the experience quite well. The most enjoyable smoke is just after a nice meal in a restaurant. "MMmmmmm satisfying"

So even after all these reasons why do people still smoke?

Well I have explained how these reasons don't really come in to it for me. Why do I smoke, probably for the same reason some people eat chocolate cakes, or drink alcohol or do any other number of things that have downsides. I enjoy it. It gives me pleasure. I hope this has been educational for you.

To become physically addicted to any substance you need to take it consistently – like on a daily basis – for several weeks, though you could develop a psychological addiction before this.

Is nicotine addictive to literally everyone? (Genuine question btw.)

I have smoked consistently on a daily basis for a few months at a time and still had no problem going cold turkey for months without thinking about it. I wonder why some are seemingly immune and others aren't.

    From personal experience, no.

I'm a smoker, and have been smoking for 5 years. At times I’ve gone well over a week without a cigarette but I’ve never experienced any feeling of withdrwal.

It’s purely a psychological thing for me but, unfortunately, this is by far the harder part of addiction to get past.

You may lack the nicotine receptors, in your brain, necessary for addiction.

    *Cigarettes are very expensive

yup.. also full of chemicals n rather disgusting once you develop a taste for roll yer own

*Smoking causes cancer and can kill you

yes, it can cause cancer. which can kill you..

*Cigarettes taste horrible and make your breath stink

    suppose..

*Cigarettes leave your fingers and teeth a yellow colour

as smoke pours out of em due to the arsenic they burn quicker so you'll smoke another one asap i suspect - n likely buy more sooner rather than later.. theyre disgusting alright. my fingers n teeth are fine. rollies ftw

*Smoke can stink up your clothes, lynx does not cover it up

non-smokers are way too sensitive to smells. which worries me! lynx is much more toxic i reckon.. if someone's been using it tend to spray smoke around, to mask the smell.

*Cigarettes give you a disgusting horse voice

a night out's all that has ever had that effect on me

*You have to go out into the cold or rain if your smoking on a night out

yup, sucks. 10yr ago and beyond smoking was very much a part of pub etiquette.. why can't we have smoking areas or something akin to hookah bars? or some sort of public house dedicated to smoking

*Smokers can't enjoy a bus/train/plane journey without getting all twitchy over their next cigarette

really?! i should quit! wouldn't want to spoil my enjoyment.. of that bus journey

*Smokers can't enjoy a meal in a restaurant without heading outside for a quick cigarette

meal's done; dusted. enjoyed - time for a quick burn.

So even after all these reasons why do people still smoke? i think people get turned on to cigarettes in their early teens for the most part when offered one by a friend.. resistance training will combat the effects some whilst reminding you how they've reduced that capacity of ur lungs. but when yer fit as a fiddle otherwise then **** it eh? look at all em premiership players who smoke, rooney cole berbatov lampard to name a few.. its the done thing.

    • Cigarettes are very expensive.
They're taxed, you can get a pack in Luxembourg for a fiver
[*]Smoking causes cancer and can kill you.
You could stub your toe and get cancer
[*]Cigarettes leave your fingers and teeth a yellow colour, again not attractive.
Can be easily fixed, lemon bath for your fingers, pearl drops for your teeth, simple hygiene.
[*]Cigarettes give you a digusting horse voice, it's what I'd imagine a cabbage to sound like if it could talk.
    Doesn't occur in everyone
[*]You have to go out into the cold or rain if your smoking on a night out, unless the beer garden is heated, even then its still cold.
Who cares?People have to walk to work in the cold, wait for the bus in the cold, no difference. There's actually a good bit of socialising in the smoking area, it's quieter and easier to talk to people.
[*]Smokers can't enjoy a bus/train/plane journey without getting all twitchy over their next cigarette.
Not with everyone, I can sit on a plane/train/bus for hours and not need a smoke
[*]Smokers can't enjoy a meal in a restaurant without heading outside for a quick cigarette.
People usually smoke after a meal, not during?

They say smoking kills. So does not smoking.

I like to run over non-smokers with my car, then cure their skin in my underground skin curing factory & make cigarettes out of them.

So far this year, I have killed 47 non smokers.

    [*]Cigarettes are very expensive.
    Everything is expensive, look around.
[*]Smoking causes cancer and can kill you.
Very over-simplified way of putting it. Tar causes lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchial diseases. It's not the nicotine in cigarettes that's the problem, it's everything else..
[*]Cigarettes leave your fingers and teeth a yellow colour, again not attractive.
The toxins and chemicals of cigarettes that cause skin discoloration include carbon monoxide, butane, ammonia, nicotine, hydrogen cyanide, carbolic acid, prussic acid, arsenic, collidine, formic aldehyde, parvoline, lutidine, pyridine and cadmium.

A lot of very bad stuff apart from nicotine go into your system, especially carbon monoxide.. which leads to a decrease in oxygen in the body. Red blood cells which are supposed to transport oxygen around the body, have a much higher affinity for CO than oxygen, it gets absorbed faster (up to 200x) and binds a lot more, making the blood cell useless for transporting oxygen.
[*]Smokers can't enjoy a bus/train/plane journey without getting all twitchy over their next cigarette.
Depends entirely on the duration of the journey and the level of addiction. Nicotine has a half-life of around 1-2 hours in the body, and per cigarette a person gets 1-2mg of nicotine. The reason they get twitchy over their next cig is because of how nicotine works - it causes the release of adrenaline, speeds up neurotransmitters and a lot of other things, basically kicking the body into hyperdrive mode. When people get addicted, they get used to working at this level, and once the effects wear off, their concentration levels drop substancially.

While surfing or rallying will cause adrenaline to be released, it won't speed up neurotransmitter actions nor will it introduce a lot of harmful chemicals into your body.

Everyone is slightly different, especially in the brain.. they way your brain is mapped out might affect it, or maybe the nicotine dosage is just too low for you. Chewing tobacco/snuff have much higher nicotine content released into the body, which could cause an addiction if that is the case.

Yeah I never really understood it, my parents smoked so I didn't have that urge to look cool that others had using smokes since as far as I was concerned they seemed really uncool.

I understand why people drink, you get drunk.

I understand why someone would smoke a spliff. To get stoned.

A cigarette does nothing but make you addicted and crave another one. And from then all its just a buzz from satisfying an addiction.

Its crazy when you think about it. Really just seems to be a social thing. If your a smoker your automatically in this group of people that are always meeting at different gathering points in a pub or a work place. The smoking area etc etc.

I hate clubs but the smoking area in a lot of places sometimes seems like the best place to socialise and get chatting to the opposite sex. Easy to have a conversation unlike the dance floor and you already have something in common.

You dont know any alcoholics obviously by your incredibly naive answer.

NOBODY you say smokes "because they want to"

Wel, if thats the case who the FCUK was holding the gun to their head when they bought their first pack of cigarettes?

I want to smoke, if i didnt i would, like so many others give them up. I choose to smoke. Some find it hard to stop smoking, other less so, but please dont make such ignorant ill informed generalisations as to say nobody smokes because they want to... seriously.

My answer is not stupid. Your accusation is

Smoking causes cancer and can kill you.

Proven Statistic; 100% of Non-Smokers Die.

Personally I hate this argument. Everybody dies. End of story.
Ultimately how you die may be tragic but it's always going to happen - making an issue of how it happens prior to death isn't really relevant.
My friends brother died last week - Drowned
My Sons friend died the week before - Car Crash
The list could go on and on... Suddenly my fag doesn't seem too bad.

Yea, i know - but.. the heart disease and lung cancer is alot more prevelant in smokers.

There will be the old man in the village who is a friend of ones uncle that smoked 300 per day had a crack habit and had AIDS since he was 11, but you'll find those people are the exception rather than the rule

When I was aged 12 my 6th class teacher used to send me up to the local shop on my break time to buy him a pack of 10 major. He often left me keep the change from the money he gave me. I used it to buy boxes of of fags and go up the fields smoking at aged 12 with my fellow class mates.

From the ages of 14 to about the age of 30 I smoked like crazy. During oreinteering where you run about the country and mountains I would smoke a ten pack while jogging 14k.

At home and at work I would smoke about 4-5 a day during
a normal day, but stick me in a pub and I would chain smoke all night going through 30-40 a night.

At various stages of my life I gave up smoking for over
a year at a time, but yet when I met certain people that I was friendly with on social occasions even after a year or two of not touching the things I would smoke a few as if a
    day had not gone past.

Later still I decided to try my best to not ever smoke
unfortunatly for me I started Drinking instead and
ended up going from a weight of 9 stone to over 14 stone
from replacing the fags with the drink.

Now I have man boobs, an addiction, a horrid waistline
to try and get rid of.

Now I have man boobs, an addiction, a horrid waistline
to try and get rid of.

    a walking disaster :pac:

I put on a few pounds after I gave up the fags as well.
Putting on weight is a terrible excuse not to give them up in fairness.
Weight gain can be controlled with diet and exercise.
Age can also put on a few pounds .

I dont know how much you drink so I cant comment on that, but if it is concern enough for you to worry about, maybe the doctor would be the place to try and correct your dilemma.

Well I thought the euphoria and relaxation part was from the satisfaction of satisfying the addiction. This is the 1st I've heard of them improving brain function... wonder if they advertised them that way back when it was legal to do so.

I'll stick to my cuppa tea anyways.

If by pouch tobacco you mean rolling tobacco, the reason it has less chemicals is because it's pure fine-cut tobacco. The only additives that might be added are sugar, glycerol or fruit flavorings.

Compared to a cigarette, which has the following addatives.. most of which you'd never dream of putting into your body..

    Acetanisole
    Acetic Acid
    Acetoin
    ..etc

    tl;dr
    rollies ftw!

Now I have smoked a few cigarettes in my time but only for reasons to fit in with a group maybe on a night out when I was absolutely hammered, don't know why I felt the need to fit in that way, I was young but even then I didn't enjoy it. There are so many reasons not to do it and not enough reasons to do it so why do people smoke cigarettes when:
    • Cigarettes are very expensive.
    • Smoking causes cancer and can kill you.
    • Cigarettes taste horrible and make your breath stink, not attractive.
    • Cigarettes leave your fingers and teeth a yellow colour, again not attractive.
    • Smoke can stink up your clothes, lynx does not cover it up.
    • Cigarettes give you a digusting horse voice, it's what I'd imagine a cabbage to sound like if it could talk.
    • You have to go out into the cold or rain if your smoking on a night out, unless the beer garden is heated, even then its still cold.
    • Smokers can't enjoy a bus/train/plane journey without getting all twitchy over their next cigarette.
    • Smokers can't enjoy a meal in a restaurant without heading outside for a quick cigarette.

So even after all these reasons why do people still smoke?

Couldn't agree more. Especially people starting off nowadays when they know all the risks. It doesn't make sense. And it doesn't look cool.
It's mainly guys that smoke, they seem to think girls will think they're cool, but in reality most girls hate them. Who wants to kiss smoker breath :pac:

Why do people drink alcohol when we know it's bad for us?
Why do people eat unhealthily when we know its bad for us?
Why do people partake in dangerous sports/activities when we know its bad for us?

    etc.
    etc.

    Answer: Because they enjoy it.

I'm an ex-smoker. But I do own several e-cigarettes, big and small. And about 30 different flavors of liquid.

Why do people smoke? Because its wonderful. Its a stimulant.

Same reason I enjoy a cup of coffee and a pint and some chocolate.

It is also very social, usually, I will meet several people while out smoking somewhere and end up chatting thru the night with them, I wouldnt do that if i wasnt. Call me introvert but I dont think thats true.

Life is short, and it will kill you.

Karma? Was he such a terrible person that he deserved pancreatic cancer at a ridiculously young age? He had actually given up smoking by the time he was diagnosed but apparently, because he punned and made jokes about smoking, it was karma. Bit harsh.

Who wants to kiss smoker breath :pac:

who wants to kiss eater breath. who wants to kiss drinker breath. particularly w/ the dehyration factor in my experience the worst cause of bad breath

tbh i don't wanna kiss cigarette breath either, am convinced they stink more than rollies n not really suprised they got banned indoors as most seem favour them n they give out lots more/nastier smoke.. i mean it really does pour out of the things til they've burned emselves out.. 3min or thereabouts? by which time you're expected to have smoked it all n moved onto the next.. a rollup lasts about an hour for me with very little air pollution in comparison, almost non existent. but we're not allowed smoke them either :( i still have a sneaky puff. undetected thus far!

According to the WHO, the proportions of male and female smokers in Ireland are 34% and 28%, so your assertion that men make up the significant majority is well off.

And please tell me who I'm trying to impress when I go out the back garden of my empty house to have a fag.
