The Geography department hasn't latched onto that 'modern' technology yet. You'd say something if it was first years and they hadn't finalised spaces or registrations bla bla, but for final year it's so ridiculous. I was one of the lucky ones who queued early and got a slot suitable. Others scribbling out names/fighting etc. Chaotic avoidable stuff to say the least. Then same story within the tutorial - sign up sheets for final year research questions.. None left for tutorials at end of week bla bla bla, Department have to spend a week then sorting it..

Well thats makes absolutely no sense! I guess its a lecturer refusing to use blackboard,

Fair enough. I know people who still get emails after having unsubscribed.

My main problem is that, being an alumnus, I can't log in to yourspace to unsubscribe.

I thought email address got deactivated once the graduation ceremonies were done...? Although I did notice that any forwarding rules you have on your email stay active even if you can't log into Outlook.

Well I do, so I can avoid problems like the one you have encountered.

Why would only eejits use the university email account for university societies and clubs? Makes sense to me.

Dunno about you, but I find Outlook to just be horrible to use. I get everything forwarded to my Gmail and set it up to respond through my college email.

Parking is always a problem but where would you suggest they build more carparks? There are the guts of 500 spaces in Dangan, it's never full, the bus is every 15 minutes at peak time. I commuted myself, just leave earlier and make it comfortable for yourself.

I will agree with the reserved spaces in the tennis courts though. I've never seen that full, even when it's only half open. Fairly annoying when they make that whole side reserved but at the same time, it is only 12/14 spaces they take away doing that.

Go to Gmail -> Settings -> Accounts and Import. Add email address, dialogue window shows up, enter your name and email and click "Treat as alias". You can also specify a different reply-to address but I'd keep that the same as your college email for official purposes. It's likely to confuse people if they're replying to a different email than your college one.

Next screen, you can either let Gmail handle the outgoing mail or get it sent through the Outlook servers. I'd go with Outlook since if Gmail does it, people will be able to see your personal email in Outlook (only email service that seems to do this). To do this, you need to set up SMTP, using your NUIG email login details and the below settings:

    Server name: smtp.office365.com
    Port: 587
    Encryption method: TLS

It'll authenticate this and now you're set up to send email from Gmail though it'll appear to everyone as though it's coming from your NUIG address. Back in the "Accounts and Import", I'd recommend selecting the option "Reply from the same address to which the message was sent" and choosing your default email to be the one with the highest frequency of emails you send from.

Next, you need to configure Outlook to forward all your mail to Gmail. Sign into Outlook, click on the gear symbol in the upper right and click "Options" (not Office 365 settings). On the right, you should see an link to "Forward your email". Insert your email and you're good to go!

In Office 365, Click the Settings Icon at the top-right of the screen > Options.

Click 'Organise Mail' > 'Inbox Rules' > '+' > 'Create a new rule for all arriving messages'

Name of rule is 'Forward to Gmail/etc'
When message arrives and [Apply to all messages'
Do the following: Redirect the message

A popup will come up, enter your personal email address, Ok and Save.

This isn't a complaint, but I thought it might receive the most answers in this thread:o It's only a small question.

But I wonder is there any quite place in NUIG to have an online interview during the day?

My apartment doesn't have WIFI and towns a tad busy for it.

You could also I over to the Nursing Library and use a study room since they're nearly always available. Although they are for group study and the nurses can get a bit cranky over there :D

It's been a couple years but I always remember the library toilets being among the most disgusting on campus. Even the bar was usually cleaner!

I'd always go for a walk and find a better bathroom (thanks to the Knights Atari, Your man on the can guide :P ) The fresh air was usually helpful for studying too.

Idiots that decide to do their group project together in the study area in the library. Whispering really loud, taljing about the X-Factor and laughing like idiots every minute. Really frustrating when you want some peace.

Man up and tell them to get a group study room. Or get a steward to do it.

Seriously, are they meant to read your mind that you're frustrated?

Never thought as a first year in college, I would have to deal with that sort of behaviour in a university library. It's sad if those kind of people can't realise how inconsiderate and immature they are.

What's the story with the dog? Is he actually lost and he is just staying around NUIG , or what? I seen him in the Cairnes, engineering building and arts milenium computer suites already on different days this week!

    No idea!

Was he white in colour? Small little enough dog?

I'd love if there was an official NUIG dog. He/She'd be the most loved dog. He could be in the corner by the couches outside the library reception all cuddled up :)

Yeah, white in colour with a brown collar, i think. Hope he is an official NUIG dog! He's really friendly and he was sitting on the couches in the engineering building with students earlier on today around 6pm!

Blocked on every college wifi looks like. You just can't send or revive messages. It's strange they may have consciously made the effort to block it, yet you can use tinder no bother

Seems like NUIG just has to have an official dog :pac: A few years ago, a dog of a masters student, Foxy, became loved by all while hanging outside the library, formed a love-hate relationship with the library staff, and guarded the big yellow thing.

He graduated a while back. :D

I used to see him walking in to college in the morning with this girl. That was in 2011. I can only presume that by now the girl has graduated and no longer has her dog sitting patiently outside for her.

Some say Foxy is outside another place of work somewhere.

I understand that ISS have the network set up to only allow certain ports to connect out on, so SMTP on port 25 might not have been enabled to prevent a computer with a virus sending a sh*t load of spam and blacklisting their IPs.

A quick Google looks like it uses port 5222 and 80. Port 80 would be permitted but 5222 may not have been enabled for example. It's not blocked deliberately.

    I heard - how cute!

Some people are allergic to dogs so it kindof rules out the possibility.

ISS do indeed block ports. You can't, for example, connect at all to Steam.

Port 5222 is the default for XMPP. Weird that they'd block that, given that it's an often-used port for communications.

I thought Foxy's owner was male...?

Though Foxy is no longer at NUIG, his spirit lives on in the students who just won't leave the place, like me!

Given the bandwidth usage of a bunch of students' downloading games off Steam and Blizzard, it's at least understandable for them to block it.

Just tried loading Steam on eduroam and I'm getting a "can't connect to Steam network". I know NUIGWiFi blocks it also. It's been like that for at least a couple of years now.

I'm sure there's ways around it, but I've never been arsed putting that much effort into it since I've UPC at home.

Admin staff *can* be quite bad. Not all of them of course.

Lecturers in general are down to earth and lovely. Same with library staff. So helpful.

I was really surprised to hear about the gender discrimination in hiring staff after the case recently.
