Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

jp1974, what lens do you use for the bird shot? Even with a VR lens and the birds not moving much I'm struggling to get sharp birdie shots. Though, shivering in the cold might have a hand in that.

To be honest I've taken good bird photos with a €90 Canon 100-300 Coca Cola bottle in the past. Good bird photos are all about getting as absolutely close as possible.... bearing mind the minimum focus distance your lens allows which was a problem for me the day I took the photo above seeing as I was so close.

The photo above was taken from about 7ft away from the bird using a Canon 5D (Full Frame so no crop) + 100-400m L.

I feed the birds at home regularly and this time of year they're close to eating out of my hand they're so desperate for food.

You can build a rapport with some species of birds if you have the time and patience. I have a photo of a Robin in my hand eating crumbs somewhere.

This was taken with a 70-200 from about 4-5 feet -

Cheers. Not my usual thing but I always try get some nice birdy shots in winter. I do feed them, but between the cats and the bloody crows they usually get scared off before I get some shots in. I've a pretty steady hand, and same, I can get good shots using pretty much any camera, but I just find birds a challenge. Lucky I like challenges :)

I don't think I'm terrible at it or anything, just need to approach a bit quieter before they fly off I think.

From the same day as the one I posted on page 28 in this thread:

Feck.. that looks like a Waxwing in #2 I think... I've never seen one if the flesh. Would love a few of them about our place.

Only thing I'd say about those photos is the fact that they aren't clean... branches everywhere.

I setup my feeding station in such a way that there are plenty of perches that make for nice clean compositions without too many distractions. Occasionally I prune the growth to keep the composition clear.

Those were taken in Saint Louis, I'd never seen a waxwing wither, had it confirmed on Flickr that it was indeed one :) [The other bird is a Male American Robin] You might be right about the branches, I kinda thought they added some fill and colour, but the cleaner shots are nicer.

The other bird is a Male American Robin

Was struggling to ID that one alright... I thought they were taken in Ireland and I thought it looked like some sort of Thrush (Song/Mistle) but with the weirdest colours on it's breast.

    ps. Check this out -

Deadly! I've had some land on the window sill when I've left out bread, but as mentioned, they always get scared off by the feckin' cats [about 5 of them always hanging around from the neighbour's]

Thanks for the tips, better not take over this thread anymore :) Food for thought though, I'll be putting you advice to test over the coming months for sure.
