    Got a killer tooth ache on Monday and after enduring it all yesterday I've decided I need to see a dentist.

    Anyone got any recommendations? Where is the nearest one to Magee? Also whats the story with the NHS (I'm from the south but am registered on the NHS) .. do they pay any of the dentist fees? How much are dentists generally up here?

    I managed to find the Clarendon Dental surgery and they've given me an appointment today at 2:30 (tooth hurty)

    i'll report back!

    Had the appointment, he did the root canal part of the root canal and i've a return visit to put in the filling.

    Nice guy, hot receptionist :D it'll be £85.20 for the full root canal and filling altogther on the nhs.

    Beats €600 back in galway!

    there is a massive, massive difference in the quality. if it's a back tooth, i'd consider seeing a specialist myself to get it filled. it's nothing to do with north vs south, but NHS guidelines as to what defines a successful root filling would never be accepted by a specialist, north or south.

    Why would you come on here and cast aspersions on the quality of a dentist's work in Derry?

    nothing to do with where a dentist is. everything to do with what the nhs deems to be an acceptable root filling. i am an nhs dentist, and i know that the price mentioned is an nhs price, not private. this is grand if you want to keep the tooth for 3 or 4 more years, but if you want to keep it for life* then get it done privately. there are some treatments that are fine on the nhs, root fillings is not one of them.

    * assuming good maintenance

    Can you tell me how much a root canal is in Derry? I'm a Donegal teacher, so I'm not NHS. My front tooth was fine until I had it filled. Then it became very temperature-sensitive, and after that very very painful. I was told casually by my dentist that it was an abscess, but if this was the case, why wasn't it ever sore before?? He gave no time frame (as in, "An abscess has developed).

    Anyway, now he's telling me I need a root canal. Wish I'd never let him near it. I wouldn't mind but I intend to have my four front teeth crowned (for cosmetic reasons) in the near future, so this is extra expense I wasn't expecting. What should I do?

    Your best bet is to call a couple of dentists in Derry and ask them for a quote - and do it quickly if you're in pain!

    yes. i will always give them their options and let them decide.
