    why was a nutrient medium (i.e. agar) necessary? :confused:

    Because it is the food source for the yeast. It also helps that it stays solid so you can clearly see the yeast growing.

    It's necessary for the yeast to grow. Without the nutrient medium the yeast would not grow

    Agar is just a jelly like substance. Nutrient agar is a jelly like substance that contains nutrients that yeast need to grow. You place the leaf over the nutrient agar so that the yeast spores drop on it where they find the nutrients to grow!
